And in case anyone doesn't get Dick's reference,
race right out and rent or buy the DVD. This -- "The
Sweet Smell of Success" -- is the movie I mentioned
a while back that looks like it was penciled by
Carmine Infantino and inked by Joe Kubert, with
Martin Milner looking like Barry Allen brought to life.

"I love this dirty city"
And for film buffs it stars Burt Lancaster as slimy Walter-Winchell-esque columnist J.J. Hunsecker, a superb Tony Curtis as conniving PR flack "Sidney Falco" and Marty Milner as a swinging jazz musician making time with Burt's sister. Lots of other familiar faces too. Filmed entirely on location in NYC in Eisner black & white!
Written by Clifford Odets (Now that's dialog!) and directed by Alexander (Man in the White Suit) McKendrick!

That's one of the quotes that helped me win a car.

More Real All the Time
Got my new phone numbers today! (No, I'm not telling you what they are!) But, happily, even tho CT it getting a new batch of area codes, mine will stay the same. (There was a plan afoot to let people keep the area codes they have, but issue the new ones to new numbers -- meaning that within a couple of years you would actually have houses next door to each other that had different area codes! Either that madness has not been implemented, or where I am going is not affected.)

When I moved to my current place, I crossed the area code zone (even tough I'm only 2.5 blocks from where I was), but because I was so close, I was allowed to "move" my phone number with me. I'm the only place on my block (and the blocks east, west, and north of me) to have a different area code.

The Move Draws Ever Closer...
...And I have been doing mundane things like getting my new phone number, and setting up the forwarding of my mail. Also, I've been in touch with my internet service provider, and it seems I will be able to switch everything to the new abode without too much down time. So the JBF will not be off line for long, if all goes well.16 days and counting. . .

About ten years ago, on one of my return trips to Canada, I toodled up to Edmonton, where most of this took place, and drove around to check on all my old schools. I was stunned to discover that one of the moves had taken me about 12 blocks from our former home (as a kid I had no idea where one place was in relation to another) and that the school I had been forced to leave was actually closer than the new school. The way the shool district lines were drawn, we just happened to be on the wrong side for me to stay at the school I was already attending.

JB, were you unable to just keep your old number when moving? If you're in
the same area code I don't see why couldn't have done that.

Eleven Days and Counting
Today I had the first official brain slippage connected to the move. I was thinking I should invite the lady from whom I am buying my new house out for a celebratory dinner on the 29th, the day of the closing. I thought I would take her to my favorite Japanese restaurant, if she was interested, and then, as the thought processes went, I would just "head on home" from there -- meaning back here to Stately Byrne Manor.'Cept, of course, this won't be "home" any more! Home will be about twice as far in the opposite direction!
