They were just back from outer space, where she'd been playing around with technology that fabricated costumes, right? Apart from her school uniform, I think Kitty didn't get a great costume until she took on the Shadowcat identity in the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine series (and it didn't become a really, really great costume until Alan Davis drew it).

For me it was this issue. This, along with Godzilla #23 were the first two comics I ever got brand new that weren't hand me downs. I didn't really know who the X-Men were, but to my 4 year old eyes, this was the much too cool to risk NOT getting!
