Mark, that book looks perfect to me. A well read comic is more
desirable than a mint condition one in my book.

Thanks for posting an image, Brad Teschner! That was most helpful.

Incidentally, I think the first time I encountered the X-Men was outside their book, in a reprint of Fantastic Four #28 - the FF/X-Men crossover. I think it was in Marvel's Collector's Item Classics #20. So yes, I'm pretty old. Not as old as SOME, mind you... :)

Something I have noted over the years is that the "Byrne Bashes" seem very often to get their stories entirely backwards from what happens. This is one such instance. Time and again I hear stories about how I refuse to sign books that are not in absolute mint condition -- and yet the reverse is what is actually true. Over the years, at cons and signings, people have been most apologetic when offering a tattered copy of one of my books for signing. "No problem!" I say, beaming. "This shows it's been READ!!"

123 for me - I only grabbed it at the newsagents because I remembered Murderworld from the Spider-Man/Captain Britain MTU. Read it to tatters, got hooked straight away, and it's the book I always tell people is the first one I recall pointing at the art and saying "I want to learn how to do THAT!" out loud to my high school art teacher. Thanks chief!

This is exactly what happened the first time I met JB at the Mid-Ohio con. I had a very well read copy of X-Men 139. It was the issue where Wolverine got the brown costume. Reading that issue still brings back a lot of great memories from my youth.

I actually just met Arthur Adams over the weekend and the first thing he said with a smile while signing my banged up and copy of his 'Creature From the Black Lagoon' adaptation is 'looks this one's been read more than a few times.'

One of the coolest experiences for me at cons is witnessing
people walk up to artists and hand over a worn copy of a
childhood favorite to get signed. The stories and
sentiments shared sometimes elicit tears.... certainly warm
fuzzies.

So you had a good HeroesCon, John? I know I did.

I got Bernie Wrightson to sign my old  80's Marvel Frankenstein he said something similar.

The issue of x-men owned the longest by me is 168.

This was the first issue of the X-Men that grabbed me.

Part of a random set of comics my grandmother brought on her semi-annual visit.
