My older brother (about 8 years ahead of me) collected the X-Men and I would sneak some of his from time to time. But Uncanny X-Men 193 was my first purchase.

Man. I remember getting my subscription copy of that issue in the mail and the utter excitement I had seeing that cover when I slipped it out of that brown wrapper they used for shipping. Wow. Thanks for posting that one.

I had forgot about the brown paper used in shipping. I remeber the feeling of dread I would have going to the mailbox if it had been raining.

Breakdown so far looks like mostly Byrne-era, doesn't it? I guess that shouldn't be a surprise at the JBF.

I bought a copy of #197 because of the Doctor Doom cover, but at the time didn't much like the issue. As a teen years later, I was intrigued by the idea of a crossover…so the first issue that actually grabbed me was:
For whatever reason, I fell in love…and promptly jumped back to collect the previous issues starting with Giant-Size #1. And, of course, "discovering" the Byrne/Claremont era was a real joy soon after.
Now I'll head over to the other thread and talk about when I left...

I had just gotten into comics and was getting all the "Evolutionary War" annuals I could find. I hadn't read any X-Men comics prior to this so diving into the deep end without a swimming lesson is what it felt like, but that was part of the fun of discovery. :)

My first was X-Men #167. Thanks to Joe Boster for saving me the trouble of finding a scan.
Betcha I'm one of the very few who picked that one up solely because the New Mutants were in it... :-) (My step-grandmother got me a copy of New Mutants #1, and I had an immediate fondness for the characters.)

X-Men 95This is the one that started it all. The first X-Men comic I ever owned. This is the very copy that I got brand new off the rack at a magazine stand in Kenvil, NJ in 1975. You can tell by its condition it must've been read thousands of times. It's even autographed by Dave Cockrum. This is one I could never sell.

The one that really grabbed me? Easy - UXM #111.
I had read X-Men since the Kirby days (they were most likely reprints), and I managed to catch most of the Adams & Palmer run of the X-Men. But the one that said "Wow" was #111.
