I would say it's black (I mean, she is called "BLACK Widow") -- but how can that costume be black if the spider on her chest (and back) is black?

Maybe it's something similar to this?....

Come to think of it, those highlights on that pic I posted look white, so maybe it's really all white? ;-)

Her costume is gray; the spider--which represents a black
widow--is black.

Yeah, I'd have to assume it is meant to be grey. Grey is not just presented as the dominant colour, but as effectively the only colour beyond shadow in some of those panels.

I picked up JB's FF run through back
issues. So the issue where they return
from the negative zone was a later pick
up. I happened to grab it at the same time
as issue 267, the Reed/Doc Ock cover. up
to that point, I thought the uniforms were
blue. Realizing that they are black made
more sense to me. Sadly, the first issue
after JB's run, pretty much determined
that the uniforms would be a darker blue.

JB jokes about The Captain's uniform being white. Sadly, that's what happened to Storm on the X-MEN cartoon!

What costume was Storm wearing in the comic at the time?

••

Her original, as designed by Dave Cockrum and seen beginning is GSXM 1.

As I have mentioned before, I was approached at a San Diego Con by a group of young animators who asked me what color Storm's costume was. At first, I didn't understand what they were asking, the answer seemed so obvious. Then I finally got that they meant the black part, but when I said that, they responded "Isn't it white?"

Somehow, they looked at this. . .

... and saw a white costume. I did my best to correct them, but we all know what happened. (Frankly, I think her costume turned white because it was easier to animate!)

What color is this Black Widow costume?

••

Miller intended the costume to be gray. I know not why. Black Widow spiders are, after all, BLACK, with a red "hourglass". But Miller wanted gray, and used the zip-a-tone so that it would BE gray, and not blue, or lavender, or some other shade (see the cover I drew).

In the X-Men cartoon Storm was in the Jim Lee-designed costume
which can easily be taken as white, or even silver.

I like the way the black on Green Lantern's uniform was done in that
DC special story JB drew.
