I don't mind the reprints if they are full stories. Got an excellent Buck Rogers comic strip reprint two years back, much better than the Chaykin series that followed  by the publisher.

It's hard for me to get excited as it seems that so many are snippets of stories or little veiled advertisements of whatever even the big 2 are publishing. Give me an actual free comic, not simply expanded previews.

I was surprised to find that the companies also require to be paid for them by the stores! Stores might be better served to give a way free back issues that have been sitting in the store or backroom for the last several years - give away first issues to various mini-series they have complete sets of that no one's been buying.

My LCS offered 4 free books and 1 additional if you produced a library card. They had face painting and colouring stations for the kids and some local artists doing sketches.

I picked up about 20 comics for a buck each, but did not get my face painted.

First time ever, they had a line of people waiting for them to open. I did some free sketches and sold some art stuff. It's interesting what characters people ask for. Kids like Batman, Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Hulk this year. That's pretty normal. The ladies like Harley Quinn. Also Groot is popular.

The shop ran out of free comics in the late afternoon. 1,500 given out, and there were at least 3 other places doing FCBD locally. From talking to the owner, he did a lot of sales today!

I made it to three stores, spent a total of about $50 and came home with a nice stack of books for myself, a friend I'm going to share with and more to distribute to some young, impressionable people I know!

Regarding people coming back, are the free comics easy jump on points or are the recipients likely to be confused and not bother to pick more up?

I would say most of the books release on FCBD are easily accessible, single issue (or shorter) stories and/or comics that are designed to showcase writers/artists who may not have mainstream followings yet.

I spent the day with the wonderful people at Phat Collectibles in Westminster, CA.

It was my first FCBD event and I really didn't know what to expect. Spent five hours straight doing sketches! Loads of fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Bill,
My LCS benefited more from the New 52 a few years back and the Marvel movies new regular customer-wise but FCBD brings in loads of kids (it falls on the same weekend as The Apple Blossom Festival which helps) and during the course of the year I see a few of those kids in the store.

Too busy with soccer games and plays this year, but I
did make it to the movies today to see the Avengers.

FCBD is always a blast at my LCS, Beyond Comics. I never get any of the free comics. I figure they should go to other people who are not readers. I saw Matt Wagner, he signed some comics for me and drew a cool Zorro piece for me as well. I also saw Johnathan K. Snyder III. He gave me a cool Batman drawing.
