And 'maths' instead of 'math'. 'Maths is my favourite subject.'It's 'mathematics', not 'mathsematic'.

Ah, but mathematicS is clearly a plural, suggesting its abbreviated form should also be a plural!

Years ago, a British acquaintance, challenge on the dropping if the definite article in front of "hospital" responded "Well, you don't go to the school, do you?"

Yep, just like meths for methylated spirits and meth for methamphetamine.

"The" is another one that vexes me. I was taught it had two distinct ways of being pronounced, the equivalent of "a" and "an". Thus, one would say thuh train, or thuh car, but thee apple, or thee orange.

Falls upon my ear like a dull thud whenever someone says "thuh apple."

...not 'mathsematic'.

I not mathsematic unless I exercise in cold air.

So..."jumped the shark" is no longer popular? How apropos.

And "niggardly" should probably be used as such, just to avoid confusion and hurt feelings.

The expression 'Jump the Shark' didn't exist until that web site started, in 1997. And considering that site 'jumped itself' quite some time ago-becoming a section of TV Guide's site after only a few years, at the height of its popularity-it's not surprising that people have already begun to forget the saying. The current TV Guide site still has a section for 'JTS', but it seems to be dedicated only to shows currently on the air, and it hasn't even been updated since July.

Fair enough. 'Going to market' would also fit in here, although that one eventually evolved into having a definite article...then just 'going marketing/shopping/to the supermarket'. People on both sides of the Atlantic these days are more likely to just say 'I'm going to (Name of supermarket chain)

I find some words are regional. In the Pittsburgh area,
instead of saying "you guys" or "y'all", they say "yens".
I heard this all the time, growing up. If I'm in town these
days, I may hear it, but it's just about become a
forgotten word.

A few months back, I read that Canada's seemingly-immortal 'eh?' is falling out of favor with the younger generation, many of whom prefer 'right?' as their end-of-sentence comment. Times change, eh?
