Erstwhile is one of those words that was commonly used in the comics I read as a child, but no-one ever seems to use in spoken language. I think the only time I've ever heard speak it, they clearly didn't understand what it meant.

I think there are also a lot of words that only ever seem to get dredged out of the consciousness in association with other words to create specific phrases (that are effectively cliches). Mellifluous tones, for example.

I find it strange that people can't figure out words from the context they are used.

Ah, the internet defined!

I had to look that up, and I studied both Old and Middle English for my degree! In my defence, it was a long time ago…

As a Brit,10 to 6 works better than 10 of 6! We all use `quarter past`,`half past` and `quarter to` an hour. An Americanism that i just don`t get is `I`m going to write John Byrne` to my Brit ears it should be `I`m going to write TO John Byrne` otherwise all you`ve done is write a name on a bit of paper! Same goes for `Write me`

Here's an actual exchange from a few years back, between my wife, myself, and another couple:

Friend's wife: "Explain to me again the difference between 'elegant' and 'eloquent'."

My wife: "'Elegant' refers to a manner of decoration or dress while 'eloquent' refers to a way of speaking."

Friend: And the big, gray thing is an 'elephant'!"

@Bill:

and yet 'you people' are ok with "going to hospital", instead of "going to THE hospital". ;-)

And 'maths' instead of 'math'. 'Maths is my favourite subject.'
It's 'mathematics', not 'mathsematic'.

I owe much of my vocabulary to comics especially Stan Lee but many of the 70s Marvel comics used pretty big words on a regular basis. I doubt if kids today can say the same.

My friend Dominique and I were having a conversation about racial slurs that had fell out of use over the decades.We ended up with a dozen or so.None of which I shall repeat so as not to send the politically correct among you into seizures.We did exactly what should be done about such slurs.We made fun of them and got a good laugh out of it.

A British relative was visiting at Christmas some years ago.My very young daughters were showing their homemade Christmas cards to Aunt Isis.She said that they were so gay.This prompted very confused looks from my daughters.
