Was she Japanese, at all? If she is half-white, half-Chinese, it doesn't sound that way.

According to Claremont, she was intended to be half Chinese. Which makes sense since she was called Lady Mandarin while under the Mandarin's control.

The body swap with the Japanese (because all Asians are the same)
assassin Kwannon was a later retcon by Fabian Nicieza.

The name-adding sounds a bit like what happened with Magneto. Claremont started by just letting him use the alias "Magnus" in a flashback sequence, then Scott Lobdell had Professor X addressing him by the name of "Eric", hence it became "Eric Magnus Lensherr". I take to calling him Crazy Eric.

Couple this with the Psylocke turning Asian subplot. It's all part of that archaeology business that JB will refer to from time to time.

I have to take partial blame for the "Magnus" thing. I suggested the use in "Days of Future Past," which I plotted. My intent was that the wheelchair-bound Magneto be called this so there would be a brief moment when the readers did not immediately realize he was Magneto. Chris didn't use this, somewhat typically ignoring or writing against my margin notes.* It did not occur to me at the time that Chris would later turn it into a recurrent name.

________

* As most of you are aware by now, I'm sure, the main reason for my leaving the book was Chris' habit of writing important moments and scenes as something other than what I/we plotted.

Didn't Claremont also switch a couple of New Mutant supporting characters from Caucasian  to Native American?

True. A pair of police officers were changed to become Native Americans in the Great Bear Saga
.

Actually a nurse and a policeman, Sharon Friedlander and Tom Corsi. I believe they killed Sharon off right around the time that I first gave up comics in the 90's.

Being a bystander in a Claremont comic is never an easy gig. I shudder to think what might have happened to Willie Lumpkin had Claremont written the FF back in their early days.

Does anyone know if Stevie Hunter made it out alive and undamaged?

I'm fairly sure Stevie Hunter is still alive. She certainly wasn't dead when Claremont left the X-books and showed up a few times in the following years. The last I remember seeing her was as a guest at Scott and Jean's wedding.

Not only that, he spoiled the surprise by having somebody
exclaim "Magneto!" in the panel before Magneto is fully
revealed. I feel your pain.
