Not shocked, but definitely depressed. Suggests widely disparate groups voting for the writers and the artists. Can't imagine how the same people who voted for those three could vote for George or me.

Why is that? I'm a fan of their work and also of yours. I've seen more than a few positive posts about those writers on this forum, so my case is hardly unique.

Here is the complete list of writers. It is heavy skewed to current writers. Even more so than the artists.
I can best sum up my feeling this way. They have Mark Millar 19 spots higher than a Pulitzer Prize winner. And there is no way that Carl Barks should be 43rd on this list. His work as both a writer and an artist is timeless.
1 - Alan Moore 2 - Grant Morrison 3 - Neil Gaiman 4 - Frank Miller 5 - Stan Lee 6 - Chris Claremont 7 - Warren Ellis 8 - Brian K. Vaughan 9 - Mark Waid 10 - Geoff Johns 11 - Garth Ennis 12 - Ed Brubaker 13 - Brian Michael Bendis 14 - Peter David 15 - Kurt Busiek 16 - Jack Kirby 17 - Roy Thomas 18 - Roger Stern 19 - Denny O'Neil 20 - Jonathan Hickman 21 - John Byrne 22 - Matt Fraction 23 - Greg Rucka 24 - Jason Aaron 25 - Will Eisner 26 - Marv Wolfman 27 - Mark Millar 28 - Steve Gerber 29 - Brian Azzarello 30 - Robert Kirkman 31 - Scott Snyder 32 - Peter Milligan 33 - Rick Remender 34 - Jim Starlin 35 - Steve Englehart 36 - John Ostrander 37 - J.M. DeMatteis 38 - Jeff Lemire 39 - Walter Simonson 40 - Dan Slott 41 - Gail Simone 42 - Mike Mignola 43 - Carl Barks 44 - Keith Giffen 45 - Dave Sim 46 - art spiegelman 47 - Jaime Hernandez 48 - Kieron Gillen 49 - James Robinson 50 - Daniel Clowes

Again, it's a really funky list, with a lot of writers whose works aren't directly comparable to each other. Art Spiegelman wrote one of the best graphic novels of all time...but how much else? How do you compare that to Carl Barks's years of incredible comics aimed toward kids, or the three decades' worth of Love and Rockets that Jaime Hernandez has written (and where's Gilbert)?
Toss those names off the list and you've got mostly superhero guys, but keep those names on and you've got to start asking where Harvey Kurtzman and Harvey Pekar and Chris Ware are.
And how high on the list would Frank Miller be if he'd stopped writing Batman comics after Batman: Year One? I was surprised to see Warren Ellis so high on the list, too, since his output seems to have dropped off quite a bit in recent years.

If the CBR list was calculated exclusively from top tens submitted by members of Byrnerobotics, I doubt Spiegelman would have placed at all. No point in lamenting it -- the audience is the audience. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Spiegelman, and think very highly of his body of work, like Raw, Arcade and Breakdowns, but he wouldn't make my top ten as a writer or an artist. If there was a poll of top comic book editors of all time, he'd be up there, though.
I'm gratified Jaime Hernandez, Dan Clowes, Chris Ware and Art Spiegelman hold at least some regard among fans. I am surprised Robert Crumb didn't make the list, nor any underground era cartoonist aside from Spiegelman.

Andrew and David have made it quite clear what an ill-conceived list this is. CBR should've made it clear that what they wanted was a list of SUPERHERO COMICS artists and SUPERHERO COMICS writers.
Then we wouldn't be asking where are Harvey Kurtzman, Chris Ware, Harvey Pekar, et al.
At least Steve Gerber made it onto the writers' list.

Any "Top 50" artist list that will leave out Michael Golden, is a crappy list.
Nothing to see here...
