I can't really single out ten in each group. JB is my favorite artist of all time, but for the most part I don't like to write a definitive list. I would have to qualify some choices, and besides I like different people for different reasons.

this was hard! I really wished you had said "20 artists" - I would have gotten my whole list in (i think).
you also said list 10th to 1st - I don't know if I can, I look at different things in each of my 10 - so I'll use "time" and the little boy in me that said "oh, I have to get that by so-and-so".

Artists:
Jack Kirby
Steve Ditko
 - the 2 guys that made me love comics
John Buscema
Gene Colan
 - can you tell I was a "Marvel Man"?
Wally Wood
Gil Kane
 - and these 2 guys got me to spread my wings over to DC when I wanted more
Joe Kubert
Curt Swan
Neal Adams
 - and I became a Marvel and DC man
 - then I quit
 - then there was this one guy that brought me back ...
John Byrne

there are others, many that you have mentioned in your lists, that I eliminated for one reason or another (basically a comic strip artist, not enough body of work, good and enjoyable but not great, drew before my peak collecting days, etc.) Note: I didn't sneak their names in here.

Writers:
the little boy in me very seldom said "so-and-so wrote this, I'm going to buy it!" the only times I went after a comic because of the writer, regardless of whomever the artist was, was when the writer was:
-Stan Lee
-Roy Thomas
-Denny O'Neil
and then there were the writer/artists:
-Jack Kirby
-Joe Kubert
and, of course,
-John Byrne
and I stop. I know the names of many other writers, but I cannot think of a story that stands out and "sparkles" at me; none I can say I got the comic only for the story, and not the art - I guess comics are just too visual for me. (again, I'm not going to sneak in any names, so my list stops at 6 - does this disqualify me?)

this was a fun exercise, though - nice break from writing up my Will.

I've given this a lot of thought, and it's really tricky - especially the writers. There are simply too many comics that were important to me as a kid, and  where I have no idea who wrote them.

So, humbly, here are my current top 10 lists.

Artists:
  • Neal Adams
  • John Byrne
  • Hans Lindahl
  • Kevin Maguire
  • George Perez
  • Ivan Reis
  • John Romita sr.
  • Alex Raymond
  • Curt Swan
  • Al Williamson
Writers:
  • John Byrne
  • Chris Claremont
  • Archie Goodwin
  • Stan Lee
  • Paul Levitz
  • Eliot S. Maggin
  • Frank Miller
  • Denny O'Neil
  • Roger Stern
  • Marv Wolfman

Like many of you, picking just 10 artists and writers was hard. I felt
like I was slighting somebody. I could easily go to 20 for both lists. For
artists alone, you have guys like Wayne Boring, Jim Aparo, Curt Swan,
Mike Kaluta, Dave Stevens, Mark Schultz, etc.
So, I picked the artists and writers that have put out books I keep
going back to and re-read with a thought about my opinion of there
technical proficiency. Heck, even now I could at least change the
order.

There have been a great many writers and artists named here that I wish I had thought to include. "Post in haste. Repent in leisure."

After Jack Kirby in the artists' list and Lee-Kirby in the writers' list, I'm not even sure where I'd go for second place.  Maybe Steve Ditko (with Stan Lee) on both for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.
