Can you really be a fan of the Fantastic Four, if you're willing to see a film that has little to do with the FF other than name only?
If I order a cheeseburger, I want what I ordered, not what they decide to give me, then call it a "cheeseburger".
Fans nowadays are a little less discerning when it comes to their superhero films (or current comics). The whole point of doing live-action superheroes onscreen, is to bring the characters you see on the comic page to life. Now the attempt to create that world, is considered "corny" and "cheesy" by the "fans" themselves. They can't get enough of that mainstream acceptance, fleeting as it is. As long as they call it "Fantastic Four" or "X-Men", add a few Easter egg references from the classic comics, then that's good enough.
Well, it's not for me. Not anymore.
So, does that mean if I'm a fan of mythological version of Thor, I can't be a fan of his comic book version? He is supposed to be the same guy, but they didn't even get the color of his hair right. Or can I not be a fan of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein? Or so on?
There are so many different versions out there; some of us just have the capacity to enjoy more.

"You don't get to decide what the restaurant has on its menu."
If a cheeseburger is on the menu, and the server gives me a ham sandwich instead, and calls it a cheeseburger, I have a right to complain.
If authenticity doesn't matter when you're buying something, then neither does Quality Control.
Having unauthorized versions of something can affect the original characters' worth, or popularity, which is partly the reason why Marvel is distancing itself from this film. Marvel obviously considers the FF reboot an "unauthorized" version.
Hollywood knows, no matter what, the diehard fanboys will see the latest Superhero film, whether it's good or bad, accurate or inaccurate to it's original vision. It's pavlovian at this point.
Name recognition is enough for a lot of fans. Not for me.

Yes...if the restaurant gives you the wrong thing, you certainly should complain. But if the product matches the description, then that is on you. Fox is being very clear with what their product is and is not. Again, you can choose to see the movie based on their description or you can choose to not see it. But there isn't a false pretense that this isn't like the FF we know and love. It also doesn't mean it isn't going to be enjoyable to some people. And it also doesn't mean that those who enjoy it can't like other versions as well.
Sorry, I just don't like when someone stipulates that someone can't be a fan of A if they like B. From a similar standpoint, I am an Iowa State Cyclone fan. But that shouldn't mean I can't root for the Hawkeyes to win too or call into question my love of my Cyclones when I do.

If someone put cheeseburger on a menu and then described it as chicken curry - I would get mad. And think they were idiots.
And never go back there again.
This is post modernism thinking at its worst. The belief that everyone's thoughts and opinions carry equal weight, because to them, they are correct, is idiotic. Wrong is still wrong. A cheeseburger is the name of a specific type of food. There are variations but each of these contain a basic set of ingredients. Chicken curry, just because you describe it as a cheeseburger, does not become a cheeseburger. It remains chicken curry.
A film about four young turks, one of whom is black and has an adopted sister, regardless of what they might be able to do power wise, does not become the Fantastic Four. If they did, then so did the Incredibles.

The "new" Fantastic Four? The Ultimates?
Eh. "Not Brand Echh" did it better.

So, does that mean if I'm a fan of mythological version of Thor, I can't be a fan of his comic book version?•• And once again we see the "So" Rule at work -- a sentence that begins with "So" often continues with an extrapolation that has nothing to do with the original point.

If we have four characters who are each in some way remarkable, we have A fantastic four, but we do not have THE Fantastic Four. As of this latest movie, "Fantastic Four" joins kleenex and xerox and a whole lot of other words that have become generic.
