I have just read on bleeding cool that marvel is ending the fantastic four
with issue 645.having not read the ff in a few years is this a good thing ?
Is the series so bad marvel see no reason to publish it or just a stunt ?

My question for jb is : if the opion is available, would you be interested in
licensing the ff from marvel and creat a new series ?
Your ff is still a great read and the run was to short.

Bleeding Cool is not what I would call the most reliable
source of info.

Besides, how many times have series been canceled and
brought back in a couple of months, weeks? They love
their #1 issues.

James Robinson said going in that his run was going to be "the Fall and Rise of the Fantastic Four." Fall's about done and the rise is scheduled to start in an issue or two, so I'm guessing his run doesn't have too much farther to go.

These days, it's standard Marvel policy to restart a book's numbering when the writer changes (if they wait
that long). The only weird thing in all this is that they're talking about restoring the original numbering with #642 before cancelling it with #645. Normally they do the numbering bit on the milestone issues.

No way of knowing for sure if this is actually intended to be it (for awhile, anyway) until Robinson's last issue comes out and there's no word of who will be coming in to replace him. We'll see, I guess.

I speculate that it's all because of the FF movie rights being tied up with FOX.

What does it matter? The FF I know and love has been dead for
some time now...

I'll give you that Rich has taken non-stories and blown them up TMZ
style and tried to make them news. But, so far, especially with this FF
nonsense, he's been right on the money. The site reported that this
was going to happen months ago. We discussed it on this site. Tom
Brevoort responded as if this idea was false and ridiculous. Well, the
timing may have been moved due to the cancellation being reported,
but the story seems to be correct.

This kind of story really makes me think wistfully of collecting as a youth. I'd check out comics on a spinner rack (at 60 cents, well within my candy allowance) and often grab an FF (beautifully written and drawn by JB).

Maybe I was naive, but I didn't sense any panic by the industry when buying comics back then. I didn't need a gimmick (or threat of cancellation?) to be convinced to buy a comic back then, just a cool cover that promised some great stories.

I agree Greg. We also didn't know what was going to happen 6 to 8 months down the line.

Ah, the fun there was in the old days.

Like everything thing else, it's just a strategic move.  The title hasn't been selling well for a while now.  Fox's disastrous looking movie is coming up so I think they are just letting it go because:
A. They don't care to help Fox in any form or fashion
B. They hope to re-invigorate the title at a later date (like JMS did with Thor after his title's "cancellation"), some time well after the (assumed) failure of the movie

If there aren't any really compelling stories to be told with the FF right now, giving them a rest isn't the worst thing that can happen to them.  Putting the X-Men on the shelf for a while led to the introduction of the All-New, All-Different Uncanny X-Men, and I'd just as soon put the Fantastic Four on hold for a while and wait for a creative team that really gets them to come up with a rock-solid pitch than to keep cranking out placeholders just so Marvel can have a book called Fantastic Four on the stands.

While it kills me that Fantastic Four isn't at the top of every top talent's dream project list at Marvel, resting the property for a while, building up some anticipation for the inevitable relaunch, avoiding the otherwise mandatory changes to the book to reflect the forthcoming movie...no FF is better than corporate-driven FF, isn't it?

Remember when the Fantastic Four was AWESOME and it was Marvel's flagship title?!?

It's been a while.
