That mullet is way more offensive to me than the new costume.

There was a truly bizarre moment, illustrating just how out of touch with reality DC had become, when one of the Superman writers informed me, after I asked how Superman and Clark could both have long hair, that Clark would pull his back into a ponytail. Problem solved!

***

I recall some "explanation" that involved Clark supposedly being lost for months and then suddenly he was found by Superman (he was actually the "Matrix" Supergirl in disguise). I didn't care so much about the explanation as I cared about the mullet looking really damned stupid.

Iron Sis, had you already landed the IRON FIST gig by the time you drew this?

••

Nope.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is another artist who can probably make any costume design work.  I'd bet that the most over-detailed, over-the-top, New 52/early Image Comics/nineties excess costume would look sensible after he tackled it.

Is there anyone who really believes that new 52 design will last anywhere near as long as the classic Superman design (Y'know, the "old-fashioned" one that lasted multiple generations over 70 years)?

I give it less than a decade (if that) before we see another redesign.

I read Jim Shooter's blog once. I don't think anything means what Shooter thinks it means.

I haven't seen artists draw it consistently. The line work is not always
in the same place. Some draw it as lines, some as piping. Some draw
the suit metallic, some not. Some draw Jim Lee's new "S" some just
draw the old one. So, what's considered on model?

If aspects of an outfit are such that artists have a hard time duplicating
it, IMO, it's a bad design.

Any truth in the rumour that Marvel, at the time, was planning to jump on the mullet bandwagon . . ?

Garcia-Lopez is one of the greats but there is absolutely no one in this world or any other who can make New 52 Superman look not godawful.

A lot of the new Marvel costumes have a similar problem, especially Captain America's.

Sometimes I start to get used to the New 52 Superman costume and think "hey its not so bad!" but then I see the old costume again and remember how perfect it is.

I also hate the argument that the old Superman costume was "dated". Newsflash: That costume existed since around 1940. If it wasn't dated in the 50, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or 2000s, then it's never going to be dated. It's timeless.
