Browsing some videogame-related feeds/social media outlets (of all places), and found these recent Twitter posts from Andrea Rene (head of news at EscapistMagazine.com):

"I'm just going to say it: having Thor become a woman because the man is "unworthy" feels kind of like sloppy seconds."

Then, in response to someone else:

"That is a super valid point, but they are deliberately spinning this change to appeal to women and girls."

"I have to wait for a man to be "punished" or "relieved of duty" to get a shot at glory? How is that inspiring?"

...yep, no disagreements from me. Same with Falcon - while I get that his history with Captain America makes it kind of cool in one way, it nevertheless means that one of the early figureheads of black superheroes (who wasn't a sidekick, or 'Black ______' or a spin-off of an existing white hero, etc.), is now effectively reduced to yet another minority 'legacy' character for a white hero. Like in that terrific Denys Cowan interview over at CBR I keep thinking of whenever this sort of thing gets bandied about, it really does just feel like hand-me-downs, or 'scraps from the white folks' table' yet again. How is that a positive step for diversity?

Denys says it and it's insightful. I say it, and I'm a racist.

I'm a racist

Not to mention a HUGE misogynist. Alan Moore, on the other hand, who can't write a story without his female lead getting beaten and raped, is an earth-bound deity who elevates comics to the realm of literature, and blah, blah, blah....

The crazy thing in this constant revisiting of the "if he be worthy" trope, is that in light of Stan and Jack's retconned "origin," the line becomes a subterfuge from Odin. Having turned the "unworthy" Thor into a mortal, and left him to spend a few years in that state, Odin then engineers the "finding" of the hammer, with what is essentially a WARNING carved on the head. "Be worthy, Junior, or lose this power again!"

Unfortunately, later writers got hung up on the idea that ANY "worthy" person could claim the power of Thor. (And only Walter really got it right, tho I'd gladly sacrifice his wonderful story to get Thor back on track.)

Can you imagine how awesome Thor would be if John Byrne wrote and drew it?  With George Perez inks?  Okay, now I'm just fantasizing...

If Mr. Byrne were to return to Marvel, THOR would be at the top of my list for him to do! Though Tony DeZuniga would have been my first choice as inker--not sure who would work best now.

The only other guy I've seen ink JB, in the last 15 years thatI
personally liked was Mark Farmer. Of course I here that Byrne fellow
does a pretty fair job inking himself as well.

I've had to deal with the same thing JB. When asked why they thought
I was, the response was "Because your not black." To which I replied,
"Now, that's racist!" I then offered invited the person to my house to
eat, but told him he was only allowed to eat whatever I didn't want on
my plate. Funny thing, he declined.

What's really sad -- and offensive -- is that back in the Sixties, Marvel was the leader when it came to introducing strong, interesting and EQUAL Black characters. (Stan and Jack even desegregated the US Army about a decade before it actually happened.)

But Hollywood* chooses to mostly ignore the existing Black characters, and instead slap some blackface on White characters. And this is a GOOD thing? This is PROGRESS?

––––––––––

* I'm well aware that it was Marvel that turned Nick Fury Black, but I see that as yet another indicator of the degree to which the worst kind of HollywoodThink has crept into the former House of Ideas.
