Am I a shallow human being if I don't think this topic
should be so deep? The Human Torch is white. Period.
Why then would you cast a black actor to play him? No
mater how good his performance, he won't be the Human
Torch. He just won't*.

The same goes for Wally West. If you want a black Kid
Flash, then go all Aqualad and create a black Kid Flash.
Heck, it's the New 52 (which I do not buy or read), you
didn't even have to mention Wally West if you wanted a
black Kid Flash, but Wally West is white.

So is Perry White. When I see a black Perry White, I
shake my head and try not to think about it, but if I do,
John Byrne is right. It's blackface, and a poor excuse
for not creating a new character and/or REPLACING an old,
white character with a new, black one. Just give the
Planet a new black editor-in-chief and reference Perry
one time (if you want) as his predecessor and then forget
about him.

Nick Fury did not have to be the modern director of
SHIELD. Marvel could have easily left him in the past.
Maybe George Washington Bridge could have been the new
director. Maybe that's what Liefeld was trying to do. I
don't know, but you could have done the same thing with
Nick Fury and Perry White, and simply left them in the
past. You could even have them retire in the comics and
then stop mentioning them afterwards. Just stop and move
forward.

Just imagine... New, original black characters in big
budget super hero movies. Sounds like am imaginary
story...

Aren't they all ;-)

(See why Alan shouldn't have done that?)

*Same for Kingpin and Heimdall, a Norseman!?!

If I had a time machine, I'd travel back to the 90s and smack my teenage self for buying X-Force.

Kids and teens would of course love Liefeld's grotesques. That's how most of them draw.

What was sad and, ultimately, destructive, was when the forty-something dealers and speculators turned this crap into the HOT property, and it ended up being bought by the bushel by people who were likely not even looking at it.

I knew a couple of people who weren't even collectors that bought multiple copies of the Liefeld crap and Image and Valiant comics when they were "hot" in hopes that they could make money on them in the future. Now I suppose they still have a couple of long boxes of worthless comics taking up space...

A tremendous part of the appeal, I think. A young would-be-comic-artist looks at a Neal Adams, or a Joe Kubert, or a Walt Simonson, and considers a career in plumbing. But s/he looks at Liefeld et all and thinks "Yes, I can DO this!"

Based on the number of imitators I have seen over the years, I'd place my own early work very much in this category. Certainly better than Liefeld's work, but those X-MEN issues were full of so many basic mistakes -- the mistakes EVERYBODY makes -- that they served as encouragement, even on a subliminal level, for those who dreamed of a career in comics.

I had been out of collecting for a couple of years when I went to college, but one of my suite mates had just started collecting because a Liefeld cover he saw when he went into an office supply store grabbed his attention . His enthusiasm got me to start buying comics again.
I showed him some other artists -Byrne, Romita Jr, Windsor-Smith, Simonson.... but all he cared about was Liefeld, and then some of the other Image guys after Image launched. I could never get my head around his loving Liefeld art -  but Liefeld's art grabbing the attention of my friend did bring me back to comics in 1991.

This brings to mind an early episode of The Cosby Show when Theo bought a very expensive shirt that his father made him return. His older sister, Denise, ostensibly possessing seamstress skills, offers to make an "exact replica" for a third of the cost. And wackiness ensues...

Younger sister, Vanessa, indicated, "It's better than I could do."

Which is how I feel about Liefeld's art. But, I can't imagine anyone being an actual  fan of that shirt (outside of its comedic properties).
