My preference as a youngster reading the books was to think that Doom's
experimental attempt to contact his mother in Hell blew open a portal to the
nether-regions with could be seen through Doom's face. Much like Eternity
seems to be a window of sorts into everywhere and the picture is forever
changing, the view into Hell would roll across his features, leaving glimpses
of flesh to account for the number of times we see portions of his face that
are not windows into Hell.

That sounds a lot like an idea attributed to JB that is mentioned in the
comment section of one of articles I read following a link from the JBF.

Wallace, that might well be the case. I read "The Art of John Byrne" fairly early on and was a rapacious reader of "Amazing Heroes" and any other fan press publication I could get my hands on. It may well have come from one of those.

The Don Blake panel could be rationalized as shock that a man would
imprison himself in metal because of a small scar. In this case, there
would be nothing medical science could do.

I like the face that is a window to hell idea but it's hard to explain how
doctors at ESU saw it without freaking out.
