I got "The Art of John Byrne" for Christmas about a year after it was first published. I took it along with me one day while my mother and I were out driving somewhere (I no longer remember where we were going).

Anyway, the story "Critical Error" is in that book, and I did not know about it at the time. I remember seeing the naked lady in the book and quickly closing so my mother didn't see the pictures, or else I know she would have confiscated it.

I know my mother must have just saw superheroes on the cover and figured it was just a "comic book" and never thought to look and see if there was any nudity in the book. Not that I was bothered at all by the nude scenes. Heh.

"Focus on John Byrne" is another great book! And, if you're a fan of George Perez, there is a "Focus on..." book featuring his work, too.

The original version of Critical Error was one of the reasons that I'd love to find a copy of TAOJB today. I could understand why our mothers would've tossed those books out, and I recall JB redoing the story in a slightly more PG-13 version back in the 1990s. Completely unedited, it seems that he was putting it together as a submission for Heavy Metal magazine or something along those lines.

The copy that I saw back in the mid-1980s was at this LCS that had opened up at a local shopping mall after losing its original site downtown. A couple of years later, competition from the big mall up the road shut it all down, and the LCS was beaten out by a new shop which was closer by.

I can't tell you how many hours I spent leafing through that book since I picked it up off the shelf in 1981. The only other book that got studied as much was this one....

I treasured the copy of this book that I ordered at the time from Bud Plant. I studied it for hour upon hour. The character designs and redesigns... The images of Superman... Batman... the nudity (!)... The synopsis of the lost issue of "What If..."
Perhaps the only publication of that same era that I spent more time with was the Bud Plant catalog that arrived with it!

Brian, The Art Of Neal Adams book that Dan posted is more of a magazine than the square-bound example of Art Of John Byrne, but still great.
I sold mine years ago and still kick myself.

I've also been waiting patiently for VOL. 2 of THE ART OF JOHN BYRNE... What's the hold up??

Seriously tho', has anyone ever commissioned JB to do something related to the book?

In Nathan Greno's commission that shows Rog 2000 seated at the drawing table surrounded by a vast number of characters JB has worked on over the years, the girl from Critical Error appears in the corner holding the signature.

I love The Art of John Byrne!  it was a  hefty price tag when it came out and was a lot of money for me, but money well worth spent.  I need to track down a copy.
