I just found this one online, from the CPL Fanzine #8, 1973. What's really interesting to me is that the Punisher's first appearance has a cover date of February 1974, which would indicate that the issue had just barely hit the shelves before JB drew this one.
Question for JB: Do you remember anything about this drawing? What was it about the Punisher that would have prompted you to create a logo and a really elaborate pin-up based on what might very well have been a one-off Spider-Man villain? Thanks for any insight!

I love it! I don't even care that JB would probably critique the crap out of it at this point in his artistic development.
The JB 1973 vintage would still whip the ass of most comic book artists today.
Jeez, makes me wonder what would have happened had Marvel given JB a Punisher Book to write & draw at this point. My guess is that THIS would have challenged Wolverine for popularity.

The Punisher character and the world he inhabits is such a different place, I'd have a hard time seeing JB handle that character now. Having read BLOOD OF THE DEMON, I'd be a little scared to see JB handle the sadistic world of today's Punisher. There are some dark places in that head that ...well, it's just scary.
I do love the drawing. It's kinda neat to see how JB drew eyes and eyebrows at the time. I have to agree with you too, that 1973 John Byrne still draws rings around most of today's "talent".

I was immediately taken with the Punisher AS A VILLAIN. Lost interest when her became a "good guy."

That first appearance in ASM, along with the 2 part Nightcrawler story and the. Moses Magnum Annual story, all by Andru, creeped the bleep outta 12 year old me. The guy would shoot you at point blank with a rubber bullet and laugh at you while you thought you were dying. Cold, man. Cold.

Wow, blessed with a Nathan Greno post. How goes the hardest working man in animation?
Great posts! I don't remember the middle one. What book is it from?

Wasn't that from Sensational She-Hulk?
Edited to add: I take it back -- bad guess -- it was from Namor.
