In X-Men #114, Wolverine is mooning over a picture of Jean and thinking about how she was the only person he ever cared for:

Since then, a love triangle was set up between Jean, Logan and Scott... and it got a bit too much play in the movie franchise. Don't know if you ever commented on this, but was this something you thought was worth exploring with the characters?

I saw it as a human side to Logan. Unrequited infatuation. Unrequited. As in, unrequited.

Did I mention it should be unrequited?

When you drew it, JB, did you think that Wolverine should be thinking "I had plans for us, Jeanie"?

Ah, seeing those panels reminds me how much I enjoyed the Wolverine character back before he became Fonzie.  My knowledge of X-Men history pretty much stops with Cockrum's second run, so I'm curious:  when did they start introducing the idea that Jean might reciprocate Logan's feelings to some degree?  Who was responsible for that?

You shouldn't have to ask "who."

As for the when, the earliest I can think of would be in the new pages in Classic X-Men #1. It was given as part of the reason she would end up leaving in X-Men #94.

I poked around online to find a scan, but all I could get was a thumbnail. Tried to resize it and I think enough of the words are legible enough to get the point across:

Wolverine grabbed Jean and kissed her during "Inferno", seeing her for the first time after the death of Phoenix. She pushed him away, but I don't think she was entirely repulsed. That was a Chris Claremont issue. They kissed again in an issue of X-Factor during X-Tinction Agenda", as they were both locked in a cell as Wolverine lay dying. That issue was written by Louise Simonson, but I think Claremont might have been the architect of that crossover.

I agree with JB; unrequited infatuation was the way to go. Plus, I preferred the development of Mariko as Logan's love interest and felt that Jean and Scott had better, stronger chemistry... like Reed and Sue or Ben and Alicia.

I'm curious to know the answer to this, too. I never saw Wolverine as low
enough to try to take someone else's girl.

I started buying X-MEN FOREVER mainly for Tom Grummet's art, but there
was a part of me that did have fond memories of Claremont's X-MEN run -
well, parts of it at least - here was a scene that I revisted recently, Claremont
at his best (it's the scene where Wolverine finds out about Guardian's death):

But then I read XF#1, and what does he do? He IMMEDIATELY goes back to
this inane romance between Jean and him, out of nowhere. Bad enough that
it was hinted before, but this time it was full-on, with no reason given. It was
like he forgot how to write his own characters after all these years.
Unfortunately it quickly became Claremont at his worst. If THIS is what he
had planned for them during the 90's, then I'm glad he left.

First time I've seen that page of Logan finding out about Mac's death. I could quibble details, but for the most part nicely done.

When I began reading the X-Men and picked up on Logan's feelings for Jean. I never thought anything should have happened between them.

I may have been wrong in my thinking but I always felt that the whole thing was like Quasimoto's feelings for Esmerlda. Like JB said unrequited.

Let me clarify. Those should be two separate thoughts.

I agree that it should be unrequited.  Like JB said.

My other is that I thought of Logan as being like Quasimoto. With Jean being his Esmeralda.
