Me, on December, 28th, 2012:
QUOTE:
One year of Superior Spider-Man (24 issues).
One storyline leading to Peter Parker's return in early 2014.
An all new Amazing Spider-Man #1 in comic shops just in time for the second movie in summer, 2014. |

Okay, I was wrong on the lenght of the Superior storyline (#31 will be the last issue) and I believed the movie would be on theaters in summer, while the release date is around mid April. What really matters is, I think the 99% of the readers imagined what I wrote over one year ago on this board. It wasn't hard. So, sure, this ending (and subsequent relaunch) is predictable, but... it's part of the game. When reading stuff like Superior Spider-Man, or Reign of the Superman, or Knightfall, you KNOW things will be fixed. It's not the destination you really care for... it's the trip. And this was a good trip. Dan Slott is one of the FEW writers who still know what "fun" does mean. Action, soap opera, thrills, illusion of change. The guy knows how to produce a comic book. I enjoyed the Brand new day, Big Time and now Superior eras, and now I'm ready to read the new Amazing... I think this will be fun.

Biggest thing to me is that Slott has returned Spider-Man to a position where even his former supporters no longer trust him. The a-holes who liked the new Spider-Man (Jonah) don't like him because he used them, the people who liked the old Spider-Man don't like him because of the new attitude. So when Peter returns he could be the outcast hero again who no one really trusts.
Unless they HAVE to keep him in The Avengers which ruins the whole thing.

Biased as I am in Spider-Man's favor, does anyone think he would be IMPOSSIBLE to stop without a moral compass? The powers he possesses are perfect for reconnaissance and stealth, and his strength and intellect are way above average. Sue Richards is the only person who might possibly stop him physically a la 'bubble his head' so he can't breathe. Were he to be a real outcast, I can see why they'd be afraid of him.

I used to remember when having a story arc like this which ran for six issues was "too long", in my way of thinking. That number would've been okay in this case, but we had the decompression (and depressing) people running the show here.

Forgive me - I'm someone who (a) is coming in late to the discussion and (b) hasn't picked up a Spider-Book since about 1990 - effectively, a civilian now - but is this supposed to be a surprise? It sure reads like it in this Newsarama article. (Dan Slott knew the whole time! Like there was some secret?)
I don't mean to be snarky in any way here - just trying to understand. From the outside looking in, it seems like this would be a big deal only to the remarkably naive. I've seen a few headlines over the years about the death of Captain America, Johnny Storm, Bruce Wayne, and now Peter Parker - but never took any of them seriously. What am I missing?

Peter never died, his consciousness was shoved aside by Ock's. They may not craft the stories for children, but they still write the advertising copy like a 10 year old could be the impulse buyer.

The conversation should not end there, though, Gene. The story has garnered all kinds of accolades for its characterizations of its players. Previous players and new characters alike are moving the story along quite nicely. Otto Octavius was always a sympathetic villain, (see JB's FF story) and here that is used to effect in many scenes. The female that Ock has chosen to be his girlfriend while inhabiting Peter's LIFE is NOT Mary Jane, nor Carly the cute cop, but a dwarf. Aunt May has been shown to have issues with the choice, and "Peter" has admonished her for such.
I have many friends who now read SSM and we all love it, even though we pine for Peter's return.
One man's opinion: It's been a wild and well thought out ride which was well drawn and Always On Time.
Isn't that what we always asked from Marvel lately?

"Isn't that what we always asked from Marvel lately?"
Hey if these are good stories, that's great. But can Marvel start doing good, straight SPIDER-MAN stories again?

You do make the story sound interesting, Joe (Smith) - and certainly, if the creative team is exploring new dimensions to the characters, that's totally cool. And Doc Ock was always a favorite - my first comic ever was ASM #56!
My point/question is really around the hype and the supposed "surprise" around these deaths. Does anyone really think a major hero isn't coming back no matter how his "death" is positioned or marketed? Newsarama made it sound like this was some closely-guarded secret that no one expected. ("I felt terrible lying to all these children.) I just find it fascinating that Marvel would think there was anyone who thought this was permanent.
I apologize again if I sound like a jerk here. That isn't my intention to anyone who has enjoyed the story or, frankly, to the creators.

'It's been a wild and well thought out ride ...'
My thoughts exactly, Joe. I can't believe I'm buying new single issues off the shelf after all these years. It's like being a kid again. I just picked up the latest issue today. I would have liked to roll it up and jump on a bicycle, but I'm middle-aged now so I kept it flat and drove my car.
