Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Neal Adams who refined the initial Infantino oval-symbol into the more stylized one we all know (with the wings following the oval's curvature)? |

There are examples of artists drawing the bat wings following the oval's curvature as early as 1965. By 1967 it had pretty much become the standard way to do it, though you still see some occasional exceptions (including one by Adams on the cover of Brave and Bold #76). The main thing Adams changed was to make the insignia smaller, and to shrink the amount of yellow space surrounding the wings, so it looks like the wings are pressing up against the border of the insignia.

In a JLA/JSA team up that featured the E-2 Batman ( the only one IIRC) Dillin drew the bat, but in the same shape as the oval.

Narrowly, with the yellow oval, probably because Neal Adams is my favourite Batman artist and that classic era had the emblem. I do find the oval squishes the bat symbol to be a bit too small though. There's something satisfying about the large spread of the black bat, but the yellow is more iconic to my eyes.

That's actually Ernie Chan on cover duties, Dillin did the interiors.

Just an instinctive feeling on my part, I guess, but the oval seems right when Robin's around and the bat without the oval works for me when Batman's on his own.
