I like both. But if "there can only be one", then I'd be a slave to my era. My first Batman was 243 so yellow oval it is.

My preference is the bat, but I have grown used to the oval.

I grew up in the seventies, so the oval was my Batman (the Earth-2 Batman had no oval). Bruce Timm changed my mind when the Batman animated series featured Batman without the oval, now I prefer without.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Neal Adams who refined the initial Infantino oval-symbol into the more stylized one we all know (with the wings following the oval's curvature)?
Anyhoo, I grew up with the oval, but I love both flavors.

When we still had Earth One and Earth Two, we could have it both ways! The black bat was instantly recognizable as the Earth Two Batman and the yellow oval was obviously the Earth One Batman. I liked that best. OR I also liked it when the Earth One Batman flashed back to his early days and you could tell because he just had the bat--that worked for me too.
Now that we just have the one Batman, I still have to go with the yellow oval. (Which fan favorite David Finch brought back for a while before the New 52 hit.) It's instantly recognizable as being Batman's symbol, and it's also reminiscent of the Bat signal which is his symbol to the people of Gotham. A black bat by itself is not necessarily Batman. It looks old-fashioned, unfinished, and a little dull.
A little yellow on the chest ties together with the belt and looks more aesthetically pleasing. Side gripe: If the New 52 Batman never had a yellow oval then it makes no sense for the New 52 Batgirl to have a yellow bat! (Another inconsistency of the New 52.)
That said, if we have to have just the black bat, I prefer how some draw it with the wings up rather than pointing down.

I'm on the fence....both versions look right to me. I guess if I absolutely had to choose, by the narrowest of margins....I'm a yellow oval guy.

I've told this story before but this is a good place for it....1989 my brother was still into comics and was a big Batman fan (comics and the movie). For his birthday he got a Batman shirt with this symbol on it:
He opened it and held it up for everyone to see. My grandfather looked at it and asked, "What's that?"
My brother: "A Batman shirt."
My Grandpa: "Are those his teeth...?"
A reminder that not everyone sees the world the way we comic readers do!

Eric Jansen said it best, I believe. There was a time when the yellow oval or lack of same served a storytelling purpose. These days, not so much so... That said, in general I prefer the recognizable, merchandisable yellow oval option.

This is one of the few times where I agree with Frank Miller:
"Why do you THINK I wear a target on my chest? Can't armor my head."
