This is a very interesting question since, more than most, the Hulk and the very concept of the book seem to vary wildly depending on the creative team. It's almost like voting for different Hulks.
Writers: Bill Mantlo--I think he got the basic concept just right and did some of his very best work here. Roger Stern--He gave us some of the most enjoyable storylines. Len Wein--Everything he does is good. Stan Lee--He, of course, got everything off on the right foot. Steve Gerber--Over in the DEFENDERS, the Hulk was extra fun.
Artists: Herb Trimpe AND John Severin--Together, they gave us the quintessential version. Sal Buscema--Here and in the DEFENDERS, his version is the most beloved, just barely edged out by the really special Trimpe/Severin team. John Byrne--Pretty much the perfect Hulk, I just wish there had been a lot more of it. Earl Norem--His few painted covers for the HULK magazine have been etched in my mind since childhood. Bob Larkin's were also great. Jack Kirby--His smaller, more monstrous Hulk was a great design and had the right lumbering energy. The closer people stick to this version, the better their version is. Jim Starlin--Just a few covers here and there and a couple of stories, but I really enjoy his take on the character.
