Gil Kane•• Interesting. I worship at the altar of Gil every chance I get, but his Superman just did not work for me.

Curt Swan John Byrne Kurt Schaffenberger Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez Neal Adams
Those top two are also my favorite comic book artists period. I've said this before but I cannot think of a better pairing of artist and subject than Schaffenberger on Lois Lane. His style was exactly right for the peculiar mix of sitcom, soap opera, and superhero action that the Lois Lane book was. Even if the stories seems horribly dated now (not all of them do, but a lot do) the artwork is still flawless.

I used to feel the same way, JB. And while I still don't place Kane as an elite Superman artist (I prefer a more natural style for the character), I think Kane's run was one of the best artistic efforts on the character ever. Incredibly dynamic and futuristic. It was Superman One Million way before Superman One Million. Gil Kane was ahead of his time; sort of like a Kirby 2029 or something.
That's why I was more than pleased to shell out for the hardcover Gil Kane Superman edition.
As for a popular artist whose Superman doesn't work for me, I go with Alex Ross. Yes, I admire his skill and photorealism. But his Superman is just too old and bloated for my tastes. I know it's sort of a melange of Shuster, Boring, and Reeves, but to me it winds up being neither here nor there. Just some vaguely familiar guy in a Superman suit.
I actually think Ross' best character is Captain Marvel (Shazam). It's a shame he didn't get a crack at rebooting the character; if not for the art alone.

I feel that by the time Mr. Kane worked on Superman, he was either drawing smaller originals or using thicker pens, so the final product looked more like layouts. I would have loved to have seen the Marvel era Kane work on Superman, perhaps with Janson inks.
