That's, hem, unexpected and suspicious!
First time ever I read such a comment about Andru's pencils.

I read several interviews of fellow artists praising Andru's clean craft. Some, actually, stating that those pencils were beautiful and that so much was lost during the inking process.

Having inked Ross, my only complaint would be that he was a very HEAVY penciler, and I actually had to ERASE the pages in order to get to a point where the ink was not beading up on the slick pencil lines!

I once described the effect as being as if he had drawn with a nail on wax paper.

Besides, John, you did ink Andru quite late in his career.
I read that, starting from the mid seventies, he was already suffering from an eyesight problem. He had to compensate some distorsion by flipping the pages he was working on to correct his slanted drawings with reverse drawing.

Such a physical problem could explain why you found him such an heavy penciller?
Did you notice some reverse drawings on the back of the pages you inked?

Ross' Spider-Man was my Spider-Man as well. Between him, John, and
Sal Buscema.... The character has never had a time when he looked
more spot on to me.

The funny thing is -- probably the inker I hate most on Andru -- is his long-time partner, Esposito. IMHO and according to my tastes. When I first saw Andru without Esposito ... what a revelation!

Ross and Mike were MY Spider-man artists growing up in the 70s.

That later got me into some of their spectacular 1950s work. Like Simon & Kirby, Ross & Mike had their own (all too brief) line of books during the 50s - the most successful being GET LOST! - which was one of the better MAD knock-offs. So impressed was Bill Gaines that he tried to hire Ross for EC. When that didn’t work, Bill got pizzed and then tried to sue Ross...and when that didn’t work, he fiddled with their distributors to squeeze out their books - and that did it.

Many wonderful straight war stories were also drawn (with those great Kanigher scripts) by Mike and Ross for DC. But, of course, my personal favorite war series:  were THE SUICIDE SQUAD and THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT! What kid couldn’t resist tanks and dinos!
