I had to get my allowance increased the week that book came out! May be Ross's greatest work. Certainly his most historic.

I would agree Rob, I think Dick Giordano's inks were a perfect match.

Dick was without doubt DC's finest inker at the time this book was published. It was a fine union with those two. Must have read that book a hundred times.

John Romita, Sr. is easily my favorite Spider-Man artist. Steve Ditko takes the second spot, and after that come Mssrs. Andru, Byrne and Frenz!

My first collection of Spider-Man issues were done by Ross Andru... I was instantly hooked on the dynamic storytelling and the way his Spidey "moved" on the page... fantastic stuff... Then he blew me away with Superman vs. Spider- Man!!!
Did he ever draw Batman in any series?

He was the regular artist of World's Finest from issues #180-195, drawing every issue except #184 and #188 during that span.

Ross Andru is definitely included among the great Spider-Man artists (and I would argue no character has had so many great artists associated with them as Spidey has).
The Bart Hamilton/Green Goblin storyline is some of Andru's best work and one of my favorite Spider-Man stories.

Vishard made a nice point about Ross Andru's work: Mood.
Maybe there's some nostalgia behind this as well, but I've often found some of Andru's earlier work on Spider-Man, especially inked by Frank Giacoia, had a palpable moodiness to it. Something about the way they both worked together on the VILLAINS of those stories gave them a sinister eeriness that you don't find too often in others' work.

When an Andru villain had crazy expressions, he REALLY looked CRAZY.
Plus, great Spider-Buggy.

I would agree Rob, I think Dick Giordano's inks were a perfect match.•• Credit where credit is due, all the backgrounds were inked by Terry Austin. That's probably more than half the book, given Ross's propensity for detailed backgrounds!

Although Andru was the artist working on ASM when I got into the character, he's not the one I associate most with him. That falls to Romita Sr. That's not to say that I don't find Andru exceptional, just that when I think of Spider-Man, the first artist that pops into my head is Romita followed very closely by Ditko. Also, I find that I associate Andru much more closely with Green Lantern than I do any other character, Marvel or DC. Sure, I think of the Atom as well, but mention Andru and GL is the first hero I think of before any other.

My first exposure to Andru was his prior DC work with Mike Esposito on titles like The Flash and various Superman team-ups in World's Finest. They did a couple interesting Flash issues (their very last, Flash #194, was a memorably creepy gothic effort) but overall, I wasn't that enamored. I think his work on Spider-man was solid, though. Andru didn't draw glamorous superheroes, so Spidey was a natural fit. I still think of his (and Kane's) Peter Parker as the model for some reason.
