JB:  "The rules we have in this Forum were not created arbitrarily. They have evolved over the years the Forum has been in existence, most often in response to a demonstrated need. (The insistence upon use of real names, for instance.)"

****

I am proud to be part of a forum that was ahead of the curve on using real names.  While the majority of early forums were mired in angry anonymity, the JBF was leading the charge in transparency and accountability in what you say online.  When Facebook insisted on the use of real names, I felt that it confirmed we were on the right track.

As far as the rules, I think they make for excellent discussions.  As JB said, they have evolved over the years.  And as someone who has to apply and interpret them on a regular basis, I can confirm that they have been road tested and are solid.  I didn't really appreciate the rules until I became a mod, and saw directly how they can keep good discussions moving.

Matt spoke above about how the mods check in with each other on the big issues, but there are also daily judgement calls that we do as individuals.  I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow mods on the great job that they do.  And of course a huge thanks to JB, who has ninja-style instincts for moderating a forum - he can smell a troll a mile away, and yet still gives everyone a fair shake.  He's much more fair than I am, and they are usually trashing him!  I've learned a lot from following JB's lead - I think moderating may look easy, but it can be a delicate balance.

All of this will be covered in my forthcoming book, MY LIFE AS A MOD: POSTS ABOUT POSTING AND THE POSTERS WHO POST THEM.

Michael Penn (someone here who knows this better than I),
have you ever seen "dokos" used outside that verse or
outside the definition of a building beam?

***

No. I was just being tongue-in-cheek. The mote-beam verse comes to mind when biblical debates rage on, and since a cross-beam was mentioned...

Ted & Everybuddy,

I want to take a moment to apologize for a sarcastic post I made a few days ago.  It was unnecessary.  I admit to being a little overly sensitive when it comes to religious topics.  I will try to be a better person from now on.

Yours,
Marc

No worries. It happens. Apology accepted, as long as you
forgive me for being human too.
