Perhaps your arguments would be better served if there were other sources on which to build your foundation.*** I can't help but find using the Bible to prove the veracity of the Bible to be like using Action Comics to prove the existence of Superman. •• Ah, yes, the old "If you don't believe me, ask me!" defense. Believers discussing the Bible often remind me of the "Brawndo's got electrolytes" round from IDIOCRACY.

His book was aimed at a somewhat larger audience than me alone! --------------- True. My apologies in advance for the story that I'm sure will appear on Bleeding Cool shortly talking about the 'Byrne/Ehrman Feud Over the Existence of Christ'.

Jodi: If the mods are going to take a heavy handed approach and censor my posts constantly, I have asked to be removed from the forum.
? What does this mean? Why would you have to ask to be removed? Wouldn't you just...I don't know, stop posting?

I've always viewed the John Byrne Forum as a kind of club house where people can gather to banter and bicker and fellowship, but first and foremost to my mind this is JOHN BYRNE'S place. And to that end, I've never understood those who arrive here and through their posting do the metaphorical equivalent of vomiting on the Mr. Byrne's living room rug or lighting his dining furniture on fire. Not very respectful behaviour to our host, nor to the other fellow forum members. There is a tremendous amount of passion in this membership, with strong opinions shared through vigourous arguments that are yet, in many cases, surprisingly civilized. There's a vitality and honesty here that you don't find many other places on the web, where people seem more interested in scoring cheap debating points and playing the bully behind a screen name. This thread started with a complaint. I thought it important to respond with an appreciation.

Michael Penn (someone here who knows this better than I), have you ever seen "dokos" used outside that verse or outside the definition of a building beam? More specifically, have you ever seen "dokos" used with either "stauros" or "xylon" in reference to crucifixion? If so, let me know, because that would give me pause to investigate my thesis further.
However, as I am sure you know, a number of academics have considered this position as well. Interestingly, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, did some dancing, and used the word "xylon" for the cross beam.
Thoughts, Michael? As I am always interested in what you have to say.

John Bodin, I love what you wrote on page 5 and agree with almost all of it, except that I very much like understanding and analyzing the words and scriptures too.
But you are totally right. Which piece or pieces of wood Jesus carried, for example, has nothing to with the story or the message.
When I read, as I would imagine most comic book fans do, I see the story in my head. When I read the bible growing up, I would see Jesus carrying his cross beam and not the whole cross, for some reason I really can't explain, though it probably had something to do with the tree in Acts, so this may have happened later, but since I read and re-read it so much, this is how I started(?) to see it. Much later, I learned/realized these were not new ideas and that there is reason to think this way.

Thanks for the kind words, Ted -- and don't get me wrong, I do enjoy occasionally digging into the Bible and analyzing various passages for context and intent, and to reflect on what meaning they might hold for me today as a Christian. I also enjoy the sheer poetry of it, and the sense I often get of the actual presence of God and the Holy Spirit when I read through various passages, despite the fact that I know it's the work of man . . . and I think at those times I can see God's love and kindness shine through, in spite of its earthly origins.
