Obama wants to send a message to Syria and others that the use of chemicals other weapons of mass destruction will not be tolerated. Is that a good enough reason to go it alone in there? Military experts seem to be in agreement that an attack by the US will probably not stop Assad from gassing its citizens if he wants to continue doing so.

No, I think the UN should take care of that situation.

Let's go to war to protect the lives of citizens of other nations, but do nothing as people die by the thousands here at home due to our ludicrous gun laws.

Unless you can directly obliterate the head brass of Syria that're responsible for the attacks, it's not even remotely worth it.

If we bomb Syria, and the Syrian government goes ahead and gasses more civilians, then what?

If the politicians had to lead from the frontline maybe they wouldn`t be so eager to fight? Look how well our intervention went in other conflicts in the last 60 years.

The Assad regime and the rebels are as bad as each. Tragically (and as always) innocents are caught in the middle. I'm sorry, but Britain and America have enough home grown problems without getting embroiled in another war we can't win, and this time around have a far wider scale than Iraq.

I think my Mom is probably correct.   There is no "right" answer.

He drew the line and said, we would intervene with the military if they
used chemical weapons.   For him to do nothing makes him and the US
and UN look weak and impotent. The next time the US or UN makes an
ultimatum, it weakens our position.

But it is pointless to lob a few missles into the country, and truly a
waste to send troops.

(His only way out is to something politicians rarely ever do: apologize
for overreaching and explain why we won't, without rationalizing or
politicizing it. And Congress must publically stand behind him in
support. Won't happen.)

It's the same old problem: If we replace the current regime, who's to say the next one won't be worse?

Huh, realizing that would make a great starting point for a novel on Pax Americana--The Great American Empire. "Because the nations could not lead themselves; we stepped in to lead them to a brighter future for all."

The scary thing is, I think it could happen.

The problem is that once again no one is asking the question, "Then what?" We made that mistake with Iraq and Afghanistan (both wars that I initially supported). It seems we can't even learn from recent history. We can't "win". All we'll do is change what's happening temporarily and then it will happen all over again.

When it comes to military action, the United States IS the UN.
