The three most expensive pieces of comicbook art ever sold at public auction:

McFarlane's cover to ASM 328 sold for $657,250 in 2012

Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's DKR splash page sold for $448,125 in 2011

And the most recent, a cover from DKR by Miller sold for $478,000 just this week.

I know comic art gets a lot of attention around here and there are quite a few collectors at the JBF, wondered what people thought about these pieces and the prices.  If anything...

My thought is I would love to know who buys these things at these prices.  Are these really rich comic fans with a soft spot for late 80s/early 90s comics?  Are these just really rich people who know nothing about comics but think comics are trendy (with all the movies and stuff)?  Something else?

I'm glad you used the word "expensive" and not "valuable".

The middle one isn't bad, but the other two I wouldn't want even if they were free.

It's mind-boggling! They used to give the stuff away!

Who's got that sort of money anyhow? And surely those pieces can only come down in price in re-sale?

Klaus just never seems to get enough credit, does he?

Like that middle one alot.

I didn't even think McFarlane was current enough - or classic enough - for his work to command that kind of pricing, though.

*********

Remember also, all of these were auction prices so there were at least two people with this amount of $$$ bidding against each other!

The DKR Batman & Robin splash is absolutely beautiful. If I was filthy rich, I could see myself paying a considerable sum for it. I have no idea how anybody could justify paying that much for the McFarlane cover though - it just looks incredibly awkward.

When you start talking about mega bucks for art like this (or any kind I'm sure) it becomes about so much more than just the aesthetic quality of the piece.  That matters, sure.  But the name of the artist, the time period in their career, the characters featured, the significance of the image/issue/story and all that plays in probably even more.  Oh yeah and nostalgia of course!  You can't put a price (or logical decision-making skill!) on nostalgia!
