What the board thinks about this.
Do we wish our most loved teenage characters, sidekicks and young super heroes to grow up? Or do we prefer to have them forever young and childlike?

Characters aging is a bad idea all around. There's plenty enough evidence of that.

What about Dick Grayson?
He became Nightwing, because he grew up. Everybody loves Nightwing.

While I do like Dick Grayson better as Nightwing, I don't like what that has wrought. We've had multiple Robins of greater or lesser quality, and their mostly deleterious effects upon the character of Batman. In the end, having Grayson grow up has been worse for Batman.

Nightwing is a case of a character I like, but would rather didn't exist, as odd as that sounds. While I've enjoyed stories that have featured Nightwing, as well as some of the stories with Jason Todd or Tim Drake as Robin, I've realized, looking back, that aging Dick out of the Robin role opened up too big a can of worms. For there to have been time for Dick to grow into his 20s and for there have been (how many now?) so many later kids assuming the role of Robin, then how much has Batman aged? And if the whole DC universe is one big place, then Superman and everyone else has aged too. In a shared universe that's meant to continue on for decades as new creators take over telling the stories, having characters age just creates problems. Better to ignore "real time" and try to keep some kind of status quo in place while using what JB has often referred to as "the illusion of change" to tell good stories.

If readers can still accept things like "imaginary stories" or multiple Earths, maybe that's where Dick Grayson should be Nightwing.

More to the point: Every in-continuity story should take place NOW. That way, Spider-Man doesn't need to stay in the 60ies in order to still be a teenager.
