Adams' Warlock was Looney Tunes to Sienkiewicz's robot nightmare. I love both those interpretations.
Holy crap, I think I have NM 75! What a flashback, I haven't seen that purple covered beast in many a year! I really must liberate my comics from my folk's house this summer!

I seem to remember Bill Sienkiewicz giving an interview during the higth of his New Mutants popularity. He revealed a couple of upcoming stories, as well as drawings of Warlock and Magus. Apparently, Warlock owes a lot of his inspiration and look to Bill the Cat who was immensely popular at the time!

AND I liked Doug a lot, too. Thought his understated mutant power was really cool
I did too. It was unique and original. Unfortunately, I occasionally read comic book sites where his powers are made fun of or are considered fodder for jokes. There's only so many mutants out there who can shoot stuff out of their eyes or hands.

In at least a few instances, Bill Sienkiewicz achieved Warlock's look by having him printed in negative. Example:
Warlock pin-up from New Mutants #23
