JB, can you share why Terry Austin didn't come over to the FF with you as planned?•• As I recall, there was an unexpected scheduling conflict.

Steve, despite my protest, my LCS doesn't regularly carry them. Some nonsense about people won't buy oversized books.•• Sure, just like real bookstores! The comicbook industry is in deep trouble. . . why?

The comicbook industry is in deep trouble. . . why? ======= it's really weird. The earlier editions I've picked up, I've had to go outside my city for them. I live in Baton Rouge where my LCS is the only game in town. There is quite a group of collectors getting them in New Orleans. I guess the shop in BR feels they've managed to stay in business because they stay the course on what they know and don't take any large chances. So, the shop stays in business but never really grows. I guess the owner is ok with that.
I did have to give him a napkin to wipe up his drool as I brought in the Romita Spider-Man edition just for him to see. Hopefully I've chummed the water so to speak and he realizes these aren't just another series of oversized books but something quite special.

JB---and I assumed ALL ink drawings were done with something like them.
I think most aritsts are the same, they make assumptions on the process's of their chosen form. In some areas, I wonder, do these ignorances actually help define them, long after they have learned the truth. Reminds me of a quote from Henry Ward Beecher: "The head learns new things, but the heart forever practices old experiences."
JB---This began a long quest for an inking tool that would give me the line I really wanted.
And, if I may be so bold, long may that quest continue, John. It's great to find tools through experience/trial-and-error that, in the here and now, give us the lines we need but the search or the promise of a better, more acurate description of what we intend, that has to be a continual goal, one would imagine.
Meanwhile, back on topic, I can recall buying the issues featured in this Artists Edition and thinking how great it would be to get a chance to see the original art, already aware by then of the disparity between the original art and the printed comic. So I'm hugely gratefull to all involved in this book for providing me the opportunity. I should have my copy by the end of the week.

I remember reading in HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY that books were generally ink with a brush. Trying to get my head wrapped around that just about caused a meltdown. "How could they possibly get the line that thin?" Simple, they're just that good!

My first day in drawing class at ACA the instructor talked about using a brush -- and I thought he'd dropped acid, or something! Brushes are for PAINTING, not DRAWING!!It didn't help that a lot of what he was showing us looked more like paintings than drawings. In those days, there was not a lot of strong definition between departments at ACA. By the time I started my second year there, tho, I had been drawn back into comics, was actively pursuing a career in the Biz, and was learning more and more about the Process. And one of the most important things I learned was that it doesn't matter WHAT an artist uses to create the images. All that matters is what those images look like when printed.

I totally agree and understand what you're sayng, but the funny thing is the printing back then made the lines so muddy! I'd spend alot of time copying your art when I was little and man was it frustrating to try to get every line just right when you could only see a squiggly blob up close that somehow looked like an expressive face from a few inches back.
When the VISIONARY tradepaperbacks came out I bought them up because the printing captured a sharper line than the comicbook paper, and I pulled out the issues and marvelled at the difference! Now, with this Artist Edition, I can finally see the lines you put down!
To my point: THANK YOU IDW!!!!!!

Terry inked it as I drew it, and laid a coarse zipatone on top. The various editors freaked out, but Terry assured them the printing would close up the zip he'd used. And it did. At least, until a few decades later, when the book got better printing in a reprint edition!)

I've got all of them so far, and am looking forward to getting this one and the Best of EC when it hits next month. Scott Dunbier tipped me off on a few of the upcoming editions, and it's going to be a pretty incredible next couple of years for the Artist's Edition line. He still won't respond to my request for a Neal Adams Skateman portfolio, but I think it's only a matter of time.
