Those of you who aspire to be artists might learn a lesson or three here.
----
Anyone who aspires to be an artist... or a BETTER artist, read through that, and understand it. One of the things that these artist editions give us is an insight into the thought process. And having JB here willing to expound on his thinking, and how it has changed is invaluable if you're wanting and willing to learn.
His late 70's-mid 80's work, both on his own and with writers/inkers is some of my favorite all time comics work. I can still point out panels, pages, things that still influence me today.
I want to pour over this, both as a fan, and to look at JB's comments here and see what he's seeing, and then go look at the current work and compare.

JB, as the owner of FIVE of these editions, I can readily say they all
follow the same pattern.
Most striking is the JACK DAVIS book, where the first three stories are
incredibly crude, with confusing artwork and what seems like desperate
attempts to capture a theme.
The END of the JACK DAVIS volume contains stories in the same
genre, yet, the work is beautiful, well thought out, and drool-worthy.
Many words to be said about your volume, as I have yet to REALLY go
through it, but, the early consensus from an artist friend of mine and
myself was 'oh, wow' and 'oh, man'.

The lesson he gave last week about the black highlights on the original
XMen costumes was something I've been yearning to master for EVER.

Your job is to create something that will look its best on the printed pages, not as a piece of original art.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you JB for saying that. Recently I find myself with time on my hands. So I've decided to give it ago again with breaking into the comic Biz. It has been so long since I've done sequentials . All of the freelance art i've been doing has been either pin up art or digital work. I've had to make all my drawings finished pieces. When I began drawing the pages it's been taking forever and kept ending up a blurry mess. Until I wised up and remember that I'm not suppose to be doing "Finished" pieces. But like you said what's gonna look best for the printed page. I'm still working off the rust and trying to improve my time. But that shall come...hopefully.
Now just to except the fact that it's flash that sells.

Its flash they're selling. But just because there's a lot of McDonalds around doesn't mean nobody is at the Thai restaurant.

I agree Steven. If I'm successful I'll find a nice middle ground between good story telling and the flash. I'm definitely a product of the era of comics I grew up reading. Even thou it was the 80's and 90's I had the good fortune of discovering a comic shop with hundreds of boxes of stuff from the 60's and 70's

Looking at that picture of Doom standing large over the FF is a beautiful sight to see. When seeing great work like this it makes me even more a fan of comics being in B&W

I FORGOT!
The REAL comment from my art dealer and the aforementioned artist who were looking through JB's artist edition was about his AGGRESSIVE LAYOUTS and choice of settings.
Every five or so pages we'd see a shot of deep space or a cityscape and, well, swoon!

You never took the easy way out, and your choice of angles was not
the norm. Cityscapes, the overhead view of the SHIELD table, etc.
