I liked the DC Annuals that were the conclusion to a storyline in the 80s..."The New Teen Titans", "All Star Squadron" and "The Fury of Firestorm" come to mind.

I liked Marvel's "Evolutionary War" and "Atlantis Attacks" crossover storylines in the annuals. I thought it was fun getting the annuals to read the storyline, but neither of them really bled out into the main series to interrupt the flow of the regular ongoing storylines.

Besides that, there were some cool creator pairings, like JB and Walt Simonson on the X-Factor annual from Atlantis Attacks.

Growing up in the 70's I remember that most annuals were reprints from previous stories. Annuals really took off in the mid to late 70's,some being tie in's to the regular monthly books. The stories and art made for well spent $$$. Anuals held up through the early 80's then really took a dive. Most of the crossover annuals(such as Alantis Attacks ect.)were hit and miss.

This one is a personal favorite of mine written by Roger Stern and penciled and inked by Steve Ditko and JB. Not sure if they ever worked together on another story?, but this one really made me smile!

I have very fond memories of 1985's New Mutants Special/X-Men Annual crossover…

It seems annuals used to serve to showcase extraordinary artists who maybe were a bit slow for a monthly, or didn't want to work full-time in comics, and the stories were used to introduce new characters or important changes. Once they stopped having that added value either in art or story-wise, they ceased to have any point to them. And there were 6 or 8 pages back up stories that only were meant to reach the page quota.

Captain America Annual 8 was a favourite of mine. Also featured a fantastic cover by Mike Zeck.

Alan Davis did two nice New Mutant annuals and one X-Men. Art Adams X-Men 9 and 10, plus Web of Spider-Man 2.

Also enjoyed the Avengers annuals from 9 all the way to 16. Grew up reading the comics of that period so I do have fond memories of most of them.

Also had the Stalin Warlock/Thanos stories in Avengers 7 and Marvel-Two-In-One 2.

Only DC annuals from the same period for DC I read were the Teen Titans ones. And they were very good.

This thread is just one of the many reasons why I lurk on this board. I had no idea that Action Comics annual existed until I read this, as it was released during my 3 year hiatus from comics. Just orded it online, and really looking forward to reading it. Thanks everyone.
