I shudder to imagine what Ellis did with the character, however. Where did that appear, Dave? Nextwave?

My favourite Avenger's run was Roger Stern and John Buscema's, and their cast wasn't a traditional Avengers but I loved it so much that I'd go with something in that vein:

Captain America

Wasp

Hank Pym (any identity except Yellowjacket)

Black Panther

Valkyrie

Marvel Girl (Jean Grey, just to get her away from the X-Men)

Photon

Firestar

  • Winter Soldier
  • War Machine
  • Valkyrie
  • Lady Hawkeye
  • Spider Woman
  • Ms. Marvel
  • Skaar

Just teasing.

  • Captain America
  • Iron Man
  • Hawkeye
  • Wasp
  • Hulk
  • Thor
  • Ant Man (Pym)

This is a bit of a sausage fest, so I am amenable to substituting Captain Marvel (Monica) or Storm for Thor.  Unless it's Simonson Thor, which of course stays.

Wonder Man
Wasp
Scarlet Witch
Vision

Roughly, the Avengers line up of the JB/Perez/Stern/et al run of the late 70s, when I was getting back into Marvel comics.

Can definitely see how the gender balance is hard to come by on these teams as Craig noted.

OK- I'll try again with that in mind-

Cap
Iron Man
Hawkeye
Black Widow
Wasp
She Hulk
Beast
Black Panther

This is a fun question and it depends on what one wants for their Avengers.  I mean, when I approach this question I'm thinking about what would make the best stories for a comic book.

With that in mind, favorites of mine like Wonder Man and She-Hulk would not make the cut in favor of the Hulk.  He's there for his brute strength in terms of usefulness but the challenge that he presents for the other characters in terms of controlling him and keeping him on the team would make for much more interesting stories IMO.

So, let me see if I can do a list:

1. Captain America - tactical, inspirational
2. Iron Man - technical
3. Hulk - raw power
4. Dr. Strange - magical
5. Wasp - shrinking
6. Beast - science
7. Black Widow - espionage
8. Nova - cosmic, newbie in training

Ms. Marvel-70s
Photon-80s
Firestar-90s
Vision (Young Avengers version)--00s

4. Dr. Strange - magical

Has he ever been an official member? Not that it should affect your right to choose him, I'm just wondering.
