I am assuming, hense the reason that I am asking, that all donations have to be done over the next month? I ask because I made a sizable donation to the Red Cross in February of this year. (Which I am still quite proud of and would do again anyway even if I had known.)•• Yes, the donations have to be done and certified by the 14th of June. Not the 15th, and not BEFORE the 14th of May. Can't have this drag on forever, and also can't have people trying to claim the "prize" with donations made before the contest even existed. This is a really simple, straightforward little deal. Don't over-think or over-complicate it.

Real cool of you to do that. Considering the value something like that would have. You could of have made a decent chunk of money if you sold that stuff., but instead you use it to support things you believe in. Very classy.

You may NOT write off a donation if you are receiving something of valaue in return -- because it is NOT considered a donation. So the winner of the contest can NOT write it off -- the others (the losers) can, since they got nothing of value for their donation.

"Losers" is such an incredibly poor choice of words. MIdOhioCon used to run a charity auction every year. The money went to various good causes, and those who "won" the items were able to write off the donations on their taxes. Can't imagine why this would be any different.

I believe that only applies if the nonprofit itself is giving you something in return Trevor. JB isn't affiliated with any of these places (so far as I know) so it should be alright.

I would think that it would be tax deductible if the organization that one
is donating to is giving nothing back for the money that they receive.
John's gift is merely that.......... Though I could be way off. I've been
there before.

JB isn't affiliated with any of these places (so far as I know)…•• Correct. (Except indirectly. My Ex works for the Connecticut chapter of ALS. I make donations myself, every year.)

There is a point worth considering here, I suppose. Only one person is going to "win" here. Will those of you who don't be content with the "warm and fuzzy" feeling of doing a (tax deductible) good deed? Or will you feel. . . ripped off, for having spent money and gotten "nothing" in return?
