Did you read the article?  The gun belonged to the 5 year old.

=======
I had a bolt action 22 caliber rifle at age five as well. It doesn't mean
that I got to keep it in my room and play with it whenever I wanted. Its
not a toy, its a tool. It stayed locked away and unloaded. It came out
of a locked gun safe anytime we went target shooting or hunting.
Upon which my first responsibility was to check the gun to see if it was
loaded. To this day, anytime I'm handed a firearm, I released the
magazine and clear the breach or empty the cylinder. After shooting, it
was my responsibility to clean the gun. That alone was a good enough
reason to not want to fire it often.

I don't care if it was kept behind a laser grid, a 5 year old shouldn't be given a gun as a gift. People need to issued parent licenses. You need a license for a dog but any idiot can be a parent without any training. Yeah. That sounds right.

I'll agree with you that the problem here is stupid parents. Personally, I
think all future gun owners should have to take a mandatory gun
safety course. Free of charge. The NRA can pay for it. But if you
choose to exercise your Second Amendment rights you need be
taught how to be responsible. After that, if you are involved in an
accidental shooting death, the penalty shall be the forfeit of your own
life. If a child commits an accidental shooting death using your gun
from your home, you forfeit your own life. As a responsible gun owner,
idiots who own guns scare me too. Frankly the gene pool would be
better off without them.

Madness that defies belief. You would think that no matter what your stand on guns is, everyone would agree on keeping it away from children. Especially considering everything else that gets banned because it's deemed harmful for children.

Neing required to have a license, as well as being above a certain minimum age, in order to drive, further underscores the insanity of the gun laws in this Nation. Driving is something that truly is a vital part of almost everyone's daily life, and yet, so far as I know, there has not been, in our history, anything like the kind of fetishistic "protection" of that "right" as we see with guns. Driving, in fact, is not even regarded as a "right". Governments can routinely suspend drivers licenses, even take them away. (And not just governments. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, her DOCTOR took away her drivers license!)

It is understood that driving is DANGEROUS, even when the person doing it is "responsible". And cars were not even CREATED SPECIFICALLY TO KILL PEOPLE.

Watching the TV news last night, I found myself thinking once more about the NRA's "solution" to insanity such as occurred just up the road from me in Newtown: more guns, more guards. The inability to grasp how incredibly WRONG that is -- that our children need ARMED GUARDS in order to safely acquire an education -- points to a society that is sick at its deepest levels.

This truely beggers belief.

Why would a five year old want a real gun? Why would a parent think it sane to give a real gun to a five year old?

Presumambly someone will be up on manslaughter charges here?

This is tragic and I feel for the parents. I'm shocked they call it an accident - it was so much more than that.

And are Kinder eggs banned in the USA? That is one weird country.
