I absolutely agree, Matt. A few years ago, I did something I never thought I'd do. I was getting to the end of my rope trying to enjoy current Marvel and DC. I'd bought the latest issue of the then current Justice League series. It was an ENTIRE issue of superheroes standing around talking. Not one panel of action! My frustration reached its height at that point and I literally ripped the issue in half and tossed it in the garbage can.

Hawkeye first put on a costume because he WANTED to be a superhero! He wanted to be famous and respected like Iron Man...so he put on a COSTUME! Because that is what you do when you're a SUPERHERO! That's the real Hawkeye origin...as in his first appearance. The movies screwed it up, but why shouldn't they? The people making the comics today screwed it up too.

Don't think I've ever read Hawkeye's first appearance. I first encountered him as as Avenger in his Goliath ID, but also as Hawkeye in reprints via Marvel Triple Action.
Most costumes these days are bland like Hawkeye's current outfit or overly "realistic" like Captain America's

...am I the only one? You're not, Ronald. •• I wonder if anyone, anywhere, in the whole history of the planet, has ever asked that question and discovered s/he really and truly WAS "the only one"?

When all you do is sit around Avengers Mansion talking to each other, wearing a costume doesn't make a whole lot of sense. (Hell, in that case, wearing PANTS doesn't make much sense.)
This comment made me miss Al Cook being on the forum.

There is a difference between a character in a realistic costume and no costume. Modern day Hawkeye costume is still a costume. He would still look out of place walking into the food store.
Of course, I always thought Hawkeye's original costume was dull. (Purple is not a favorite of mine without another color like green or yellow.) The new one doesn't seem that much of a change to me.
And Cage's yellow shirt look really was never a costume like Spider-man's. It looked like stylized Blaxplotation street clothes.

I've never liked any Hawkeye costume where he doesn't have his mask. That's what makes his look unique to me.

The saddest aspect of the modern pages posted in this thread to me is
all the talking. Talking, talking and more talking. Anything but
action. Oh I know they're handpicked to illustrate the points being
discussed, but I've read far too many mainstream Marvel and DC comics
over the last 10-15 years where that's all the heroes do. Entire issues
of the friggin' AVENGERS filled with nothing but chit-chat. Neurotic
navel-gazing about their place in the world. Endless banter that
ultimately signifies nothing, doesn't move the story forward making it
all feel like so much filler. And not good filler either!
***
Matt, back in 2004, I picked up a Superman comic for the first time in years. It was SUPERMAN #204, I believe. Almost the entire issue featured Superman chatting to a priest about the disappearance of a population somewhere. It was inaccessible and there was no action, whatsoever.
Decades before this, I could pick up a Superman comic and at least see some sort of action. And a self-contained storyline. Oh, and it was all accessible, too. Where did the industry go wrong?

...am I the only one? You're not, Ronald. --- This is such a hard habit to break. It's like trying to stop biting my nails. I wonder if it is akin to a verbal pause, like "uhing" and "ahing." I still catch myself speaking it aloud. Twitter has actually helped me rehab this bad habit somewhat since you don't have a lot of character space for rhetorical posturing.

It's pretty much a T-shirt and pants. I think he could pick up a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread without getting any stares.
As for Cage, the tight pants,Captain Marvel boots and giant chain belt pushes it squarely into costume territory.
