Uh, sorry JB, but they both got machine-gunned in the first issue of the reboot, and Grunt was last seen carrying Nudge into the jungle...

Who wrote that issue? They just made my list of creators I'll never buy anything by again.

All in all, and based only on the panels posted above, it seems a pretty severe misreading of the characters, and the dynamic of their relationship. But, ultimately it doesn't matter, does it? When I created Nudge and Grunt, I "gave" them to DC. If DC wants to waste them, it's entirely their perogative. In fact, in terms of so many of their characters, it seems like policy!

In a recent issue of LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, Giffen - with co-
plotter/scripter Paul Levitz - killed long-time Legionnaire Sun Boy in a
spaceship crash. His corpse was then eaten by some cannibalistic
natives of the planet his team crash-landed on.

Seriously...

"There was at least one Marvel writer who argued that Reed was a
mutant, because he was so smart."

I thought that for a while, too. Then I turned twelve.

For what it's worth:

 QUOTE:
Nrama: And you had said, when this book was announced, that there would be a lot of those other Doom Patrol members participating in the comic. Is that still true?

Giffen: Absolutely. Within the first year, you're going to see more characters than you thought showing up in the Doom Patrol, from all of the different Doom Patrol incarnations. And what I try to do is I try to make sure that I'm keeping my promise of a new character or new concept or a new situation in every issue while at the same time, respecting the Doom Patrol's history and realizing that there are Doom Patrol characters out there that the fans would like to see again. You don't just trot them in and make them completely unrecognizable; you respect the creators' work who have come before you.

And I know people are going to say, "But you killed Nudge in the first issue!" There was areason for that.

Nrama: Is she really dead? Or is she coming back from the dead?

Giffen: You know, there's this whole idea out there that death is a revolving door in comics. But I will tell you, Nudge is gone. Nudge is gone and yes, the four-armed monkey carried her body off and fled into the jungle. But that is not the end of the story. It was not an "Ensign Redshirt" moment. In other words, I didn't just take the character and go, "Eh, let's take one of the Doom Patrol characters I like the least and slaughter the character." Because if I was going to take one of the Doom Patrol characters that I like the least and slaughter the character, it wouldn't have been Nudge!

Ultimately I think whatever he planned got waylaid by low sales/Flashpoint-New52. Whatever it was, I think this is just indicative of the problems with the overuse of gratuitous death in comics to drive a story.

Also, within a year, DC had killed off two of its non-stereotypical Asian characters (the other being Ryan Choi). I joked at the time that Dan Didio had issued a directive to kill off any Asian characters who were not martial artists/mystics/dragon ladies/socially awkard science geeks. I was especially impressed with Ryan Choi, because he did know martial arts and was a science nerd, but Gail Simone never wrote him as Asian Martial Artist™ or Asian Science Geek™.

Getting back on topic, I really liked JB's sequence where Reed used yoga (or other relaxation exercise) to allow his body to flow out of Doom's trap like a liquid.

I don't recall that issue; however, I do remember JB having Reed do
something similar when the FF battled the Psycho-Man.

Have they ever pinned down just how vulnerable Reed's skin is?

i.e. Is it tougher than standard human skin?  For the kind of elasticity demonstrated on panel it would seem to be.

ISTR one of the 1970's Marvel novels where Reed had to break through a door in a room filled with hydrochloric acid, and it was noted that his hands were severely burned while the portions of his skin under the USM fabric were not.  It's likely non-canonical but worth mentioning.

If you think Reed's powers are ill-defined, there's just as much (if not more) variation in how Spider-man's ability to stick to objects is depicted.  At its most extreme I believe Spider-man was pulled off a building with chunks of brick still adhering to his feet!

Seems new characters are added with each new DP series -- not sure why that is?

The original DP are by far my favorites...

...years ago I read their original run. I really enjoyed it!

I feel those characters could carry the series.

So, do you think this is in the Richards' record collection?
