The original Drake/Premiani debut story of the Doom Patrol did have an explanation of how despite getting a seemingly cool superpower, Rita had nevertheless become a traumatized shut-in like the others:

 QUOTE:
Rita: "I couldn't control this terrible power! It happened anywhere...anytime!"

Chief: "So you gave up your career...hid from the world out of shame and fear!  But now, Rita, you have learned to control that strange power!  Now you can end your self-exile!"

On that point, it's not too hard to imagine a future writer showing Rita again having intermittent problems, or regularly experiencing sudden physical changes brought on by emotionally charged sleeping/dreaming.

But even then, the trouble would manifest itself in suddenly growing or shrinking, either with her whole body or (later on) specific body parts.  However, that wouldn't include anything about becoming a puddled mass — her superpower still has her body being fully recognizable and intact.

In the latest incarnation of Doom Patrol, Elastigirl is sentient silly putty. The Chief resurrected Rita by cloning her from a bit of skull recovered from the site where the team died. But he wanted the new Rita to be more durable, so he engineered her new cloned body out of a putty-like protoplasm.

Every morning she wakes up as a shapeless blob and has to "sculpt" her limbs and features back into place, using photos of herself as reference. Her leg gets sliced off in battle and it's a uniform putty-pink inside...she just sticks it back on.

(Insert Facepalm picture here)

One more reason I'm glad not to pick up current DC (outside of a few Showcase TPBs and perhaps a mini that appears not to be tied in with the Nu52 stuff).  Give me the classic 1960s DP any day.

New powers AND a previously unrevealed ability to sculpt!

Ah, well! T'would seem "my" Doom Patrol is gone, gone, gone! I wonder if I could have Nudge and Grunt back?

Uh, sorry JB, but they both got machine-gunned in the first issue of the reboot, and Grunt was last seen carrying Nudge into the jungle...

Then again, everything was basically wiped when the "New 52" showed up...

And why "Maddy Rouge" is Cliff Steele's telepathic / empathic secretary in MY GREATEST ADVENTURE...

the genetics and made a new person. That is not a
resurrection. So this is Rita Jr.

But be careful! There was at least one Marvel writer who argued that Reed was a mutant, because he was so smart!

One thing I never liked was the use of the word "talent" in place of "power" or "ability." To me, a talent is something everyone can do, but that a talented person can do better.

Nightcrawler doesn't have a talent for teleporting...

That's so tacky. If you don't like another creator's characters, just don't use them again. But killing them off is just petty. You can't even hide behind the "good story" defense -- if they are bad characters (hence your not wanting to use them in the first place), then their deaths will have little dramatic impact, so what's the point? And if their deaths *will* have an impact, then it seems like basic courtesy to allow the creator the option of killing them.
