All this brain stretching and rearranging. What was wrong with Reed just figuring things out because he's SMART?

You have to be pretty damn smart to successfully rearrange your own brain!

On another level, Morrison's story was a fake-out on the whole tendency to depict Reed as an absent-minded professor or even something of a high-functioning autistic.  The story arc began with Sue worrying about these things, only to have the red herring revealed at the end.

Seems like a step beyond the stupidity of the 2005 movie, where Reed
is said to always be "stretching" for answers, and Sue feels ignored to
the point of literally becoming invisible.

Here's the Hanna Barbera ^0's FF cartoon adaption of that Super Skrull story that JB posted above. Notice that Reed expands his hand into a large fist instead of a gigantic sledge hammer.

Couldn't get more than a few seconds past the opening credits -- and those were hard slogging!

Ye Gods, those Hanna Barbera cartoons were wretched. It was as if they had four sound effects and three voices. And let's not even start on the art! Just thinking about it makes my eyes bleed!!

I saw that in comics in at least one place during the 70s or 80s; "What
If the Fantastic Four had different powers?" The Watcher said their
powers are manifestations of psychological elements, IIRC.

I still have a fondness for those HB cartoons of the 1960s...

But yeah, the quality of that FF show is not up to JONNY QUEST's level. Paul Frees' voice is stuck in my mind as Ben Grimm.

Would Reed's stretching powers actually make a sound effect like on the show?

Byrne:  In issue 2, he gave us this…

…tho Stan's dialog suggests he might have already been thinking this was not the way to go with Mister Fantastic.

---

In issue 16, we are told how Reed's powers work...

I always found Reed's intellect to be at least as much of a superpower
as his elasticity.

••

But be careful! There was at least one Marvel writer who argued that Reed was a mutant, because he was so smart!

Wasn't it established that Reed was already a great scientist before the accident that gave him his powers?
