In Earth X Reed did not stretch his brain to become smarter, but to become telepathic so he could use Cerebro.

As Ben Grimm would say: "Whatta cornball idea, Stretcho!" :D

It seems the artists that can't get the Thing also tend to have Reed doing things he shouldn't. That almost always includes neck stretching that appears to serve no purpose but to show a stretchy neck!
Elongated Man was disturbing during the Novick era. is eyeballs have been shown to stretch up the side of a building to peek over the roof. egad.

Being telepathic would, of course, "stretch" a person's brain -- but only metaphorically. Not in the way Reed stretches his body.

That picture of Reed stretching his neck only serves to remind me how seeing him stretch skin is icky. I don't know what Bryan Hitch was thinking when he put Reed in short sleeves...eww!

BTW, I agree with the comments about EARTH X, but in the interest of accuracy, it's hardly new material as some have mentioned. That series came out 14 years ago. Hard to believe its been that long ago.

One of the first comics I read when I seriously got into comics in the 5th grade was FF 200 where Reed turned his fist into a mallet that reminded me of a meat tenderizer.
Ultimate Reed went a different way. The transformation was closer to Ben. The substance and structure of the body changed, so that he has no organs like a human; his brain cells continue to increase in number so he is become smarter. The strange part is this new substance is viritually indestructible and immortal. They definitely went the "plastic" route.

During the time I had the FF traveling thru the Negative Zone, I did this scene. . . T'wasn't until I saw the printed, color comic that I realized this was not among my best ideas!!

Reed Richards -- the Human Blanket. I'd agree that it looks rather odd in retrospect.

Can't help but think it would have looked even WORSE if the colorist had reversed the hues in that last panel!!(And, no, we don't need any Photoshopper to show us how MUCH worse!)

======= I'm just glad it was a lesson learned early. What gets me is that between your run and the Lee/Kirby run, these are some of the most read comics ever. How is it that after the trial and error, people keep making the same mistake!
Of course now they wear full sleeve uniforms again, they just look like someone has been paying connect the dots on them.

Cool thread!!
Reed Richards is one of my favorite characters, and your take on him during your run is the reason, JB. Threads about FF are gold to me, especially since I have been re-reading your run over the last few weeks what with the announcement of the Artist's Edition.

Rob Ocelot:
QUOTE:
In Earth-X (or one of the sequels) Reed figures out that he can become smarter by increasing the surface area of his brain. Yes, he stretched his brain. |
|
|
John Byrne:
QUOTE:
That's a pretty typical example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. Our brains are crinkled as they are so that more surface can fit inside our skulls without our heads becoming too big. If Reed "stretched his brain", while there would APPEAR to be more surface, there would still be the same number of cells, neurons, synapses, etc. Kind of like blowing up a balloon -- the balloon fils more volume, but the actual MATERIAL in the balloon has not increased at all. |
|
|
Grant Morrison once had Reed do something slightly different with his brain: Not stretching it, but rearranging the synapse structures of his brain, through a period of deep meditation and concentration. This allowed him to change his method of logical thinking, and to come up with a lateral solution to the story's evil plot by Dr. Doom.
I don't recall what the evil plot was, or what Reed's off-the-wall solution was. But I do remember that particular twist Morrison added. The interesting thing is that It was part of a big fake-out: Sue had been deeply worried about Reed recently showing signs of being anti-social and cut off from others.
