I would love to see the Surfer tackle Dark Phoenix.

I bet those giant gizmos on Dr. Doom's arms are going to allow him to siphon off (a portion of?) Phoenix's power, a la FF #57 when he stole the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer.  I can't wait to find out how the FF defeat him, whether the X-Men get involved (including that new one, Kitty Pryde), and whether Doom has siphoned enough power to take Jean out of the picture or do our heroes have to take on both Doom and Phoenix at the same time.

What do you mean it's not a real comic?

JB: As always, I love the way you've handled the different textures -- Doom's armor, his cloak, the Thing, the rubble, the people -- all clearly textured as what they are supposed to be with nothing more than pen and ink on flat paper.  I also love the visual depth of this piece -- are you sure you haven't somehow perfected no-glasses 3D and used it on this piece?

LOVE the hatching on Doom. Great piece, congrats to the person who gets this.

Edited to add
I love the cross-hatching on Doom's armor....I laugh when people think that you've lost a step, Mr Byrne...I would buy FF comics again in a heartbeat if you wrote and drew it again...

Sorry James I didn't catch your post, I could have said, "I agree completely with James"

JB, seeing that page from X-MEN 136 reminds me how much I miss of the Marvel of old..............

Has it really been 33 years since that issue was on the racks?

Silver Surfer might be a good match for Phoenix, but then again, if Thor is no match for Phoenix and Silver Surfer cannot handle Thor, I think he probably wouldn't last that long...

There were a lot of annoyed fans, I can tell you, when X-MEN 136 came out, and there was no confrontation between Dark Phoenix and the Surfer.

This is a good example, as a matter of fact, of just how much impact the writer can have, for those who still wonder what Stan did, vs what Jack did. I was heavily plotting the book by this point, and that page of reactions shots was something I tossed in as I was drawing. Chris, unfortunately, chose to script it as if the Surfer was going to head off and intercept Phoenix -- but that didn't happen. After all, by the time I saw the finished issue, I'd already drawn about 4 issues beyond it!

Years later, a writer showed up at Marvel who had impressed Shooter, and Shooter asked me if there were any "plums" that could be given to that writer for specials or graphic novels. I mentioned this "untold tale", and Shooter asked me to write up a plot, which I did. For some reason, the project did not go any further than that, tho years later I found a copy of my plot (written on a typewriter!) and pitched it to the X-Office. Again, we were all set to go, and then somehow the energy just trailed off . . .

Don't forget Stan and Jack had Thor take down Galactus mano-a-mano.
