Really, the spatial organization is pretty impressive.  It's nice to read the requests, I think about how I might go about trying to fulfill them, then I get to see John Byrne's "master's" solution.

Wow! Everything is great. The menacing look on Phoenix's face, the expressions of desperation on Reed, Sue and Johnny, while Ben looks like he wants to smack somebody into space with that piece of wreckage. Doom looks great too,and I love the buildings in the background.

I love the cross-hatching on Doom's armor....I laugh when people think that you've lost a step, Mr Byrne...I would buy FF comics again in a heartbeat if you wrote and drew it again...

I find myself thinking of a movie I saw when I was a kid. THE FIVE PENNIES, starring Danny Kaye as bandleader "Red" Nichols. After a long absence, he gets ready to make a comeback, and his wife, peeking out at the audience, comments on what a large crowd there is for the first show. Nichols, a trumpet player, frowns and says "They've just come to see me split my lip."

Alas, in this age of the internet, I know all too well how much of the "audience" would be out there waiting for me to stumble, if I returned to any Marvel book. Hell, they wouldn't even wait! The work would be excoriated before I even put pencil to paper. (Just typing these words has caused Erik Larsen's nipples to get hard!)

Incidentally, for those who might be wondering, this is not a "printed" logo, such as I described in a recent commission thread. Obviously, the 20x30 board is WAY too big to fit thru my photocopier, so instead I traced the logo onto the paper using my Artograph.

Like Spock said in Wrath of Khan... "it is always easier to destroy, than it is to create...." Would-be internet fanboy critics, nit-picking everything to death, without really understanding the craft....they focus on the finger, instead of all the heavenly glory. It's too bad, but I understand why you don't go back, given today's superhero comic book climate, Mr Byrne..

That is definitely a story I would like to read !
Strange though, the FF seem more threatened by Doom rather Dark Phoenix (except maybe Johnny arriving late to the party and focusing on the flying foe).
Maybe that would have to do with the cosmic guns Doom intends to use to defeat Dark Phoenix...
Love that commission ! Congrats to the commissionner, and once again, amazing JB !

No one draws these characters better than JB.

No one.

Working on this piece, I found myself wondering if I might somehow fit somewhere in THIS sequence. . .
