I guess the obvious question is, "Who Green-lighted a Red Hulk?'

My answer would be the fans.

Carmen's got it. Marvel has a "Pet Avengers" title. During the 60's DC had the Legion of Super-Pets, but they never gave them their own book...

I agree. It's a complete cheat to hide the identity of the character. I would have even accepted Ross shaving off his moustache and wearing a fake one to keep the Red Hulk's identity secret, as silly as that might sound, but the magic disappearing moustache is just stupid.

I've often wondered if Ross being the Red Hulk was an 11th hour change-up. Maybe his identity was supposed to be revealed to be someone else and some fan-turned-pro said "hey, wouldn't it be cool if...???".

I know some of the speculation was leaning towards Frank Castle (because of RH's knowledge of firearms and military tactics) or some agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a while.

THAT is actually a very clever, plausible explanation for a very crappy idea. Well done.

A not-dead Glenn Talbot seemed to be the frontrunner for a while, but I guess he was a "red herring."  I like the glue-on mustache idea, though.

I thought Red Hulk was going to be a villain and thought that was an
okay idea. I thought he was gonna turn out to be Clay Quartermain or a
never-truly-dead Glenn Talbot. I wasn't thrilled with the Mjolnir bit and
they pretty much lost me with Red Hulk punching out the Watcher.
When I found out he turned out to be General Ross, I rolled my eyes.
Hard.

Overpowered characters, alternate realities, (616, Ultimate. etc.) Pet Avengers, Hulk Family, artists drawing from full scripts...looks like DC fanboys have taken over the Marvel Bullpen....

I must have missed something. Isn't the whole point of Juggernaut that he is SLOW and RELENTLESS? When did he develop the speed he'd need to pull off a trick like this?

+++

His force field slowed Mjolnir's flight considerably. I seem to recall the hammer slowing as it approached him, then gradually turning around so that it could return to Thor's hand. The way DeFalco and Frenz presented it, no great speed was required on the Juggernaut's part.

+++

But don't things just bounce off a force field, pretty much with equal speed as the initial impact? Seems like DeFalco and Frenz cheated a bit.

+++

Well, Juggernaut's force field is mystical in nature and Mjolnir has magical enchantments. Maybe their respective energies got a little muddled and voila!

+++

Cytorrak magic meeting Asgardian magic. Thor wasn't feeling 100% at the time, due to one of Loki's spells, so it's possible that Mjolnir wasn't hitting Juggernaut at full power, either.

••

Byrne's Law #387: When the readers have to expend this much energy to explain a "bit", it's a BAD bit!!

And vice-versa.

It's been a long time since Marvel and DC have had truly distinct identities.

Red Hulk also falls within that school of bold, nu Marvel concepts that already received a trial run in the pages of What If...

Please note that the Ross Hulk here does in fact still have a mustache.

Marvel and DC have been essentially interchangeable since the mid-80's. That was when DC threw it's entire history under a bus and went all in on a failed attempt to ape the cohesive Marvel Universe. The only points of differentiation since have been DC's attempts at maintaining "legacy" heroes while Marvel maintained a more cosmic scope, continuing to set a large part of it's adventures in space. Those edges were then blunted and shaved away when Marvel began to publish books about the young up-and-comers in the MU, essentially turning the mainstream characters into teachers and advisors, and Geoff Johns took over GL and that title became the cosmic backbone of the DCU.

In recent years, there have been what seem to be conscious efforts by Marvel to imitate the DC formulas of decades gone by to see there's any juice left in those tropes that modern readers might enjoy (Marvel Apes, Pet Avengers, Books focusing on the hero's girlfriend) Modern readers were not enthusiastic. DC's marketing attempts to mirror Marvel's recent projects have been completely transparent (The Winter Soldier begets the Red Hood, Marvel Zombies begets Blackest Night, the Civil War begets WW's army vs. Aquaman's in the House of Zoom universe...)

These days the companies aren't just similar. They're going out of their way to appear identical.
