Kane's pencils were never more dynamic than during this period! The
inking, though, is a bit lacking, I find.

I think it was Neal Adams who pointed out the lack of variation in line
weight.

Gil Kane, like Ditko, can do no wrong. His stuff is beyond brilliant.

I read an interview with Kane that discusses his inking. As I recall he liked inking his own work but didn't consider himself an inker per se.
He inked with a felt tip pen and liked the "dead" line.

I greatly like his work from this period. While I can't say I prefer it to Kane inked by Janson or Romita Sr. it stands as solid comic art that comes across as pure Kane.

....and different artists care about different things in the end. I don't think Kane worried much about line quality or creating shape with line thickness. I think he was making his pencil line dark enough to be reproduced. Which is probably why he didn't consider himself an inker.

When I think of Gil, I think of a lot of characters from my childhood, like Green Lantern, and the Atom. I also think of the wonderful work he did on Spider-Man. But I don't think of Superman. It's one of those situations where the artist and the character just don't seem a good match, for some reason. Like Jack Kirby and Batman, or Neal Adams and the Fantastic Four.

SPECIAL NOTE to Whoever Set Up the Copy on the Cover of this Volume:

Was it really more important that we see the big empty space in the top of the badguy's head, than that we see Superman's HAND?

Kane's Superman work isn't my favorite but I still enjoy it. My favorite
Kane work is probably the Marvel John Carter Warlord Of Mars series.
His work there is amazing.

I have the collection but have yet to start reading it. I'm with Simko, Kane can do no wrong!

Robert, that sketch is great. I'm jealous. I met Kane at a Motor City Con but he was not sketching at the show. I am pretty happy with the comics I had him sign.

I love Gil Kane's work, but I certainly don;t think of his Superman work.

I think of -

Spider-Man
Green Lantern
the Atom
John Carter
Captain Mar-Vell
Adam Warlock

Sounds like I might be in the minority here but I loved the style of Kane's inking. When others inked him, I often didn't recognize the work as his unless I checked the credits, but when he self-inked his "voice" was so always distinctive. The drawings look as though they just fell out of the marker onto the page.

I wonder what kind of markers he used and if his original art is holding its contrast.
