In that first SHOWCASE appearance, Infantino's pencils are so overwhelmed by Kubert's inks, he might as well NOT have drawn those first two stories! But the end result is one of the best looking comics DC ever produced.

++++

Did Infantino do full detailed pencils for that story, or was it more of a breakdowns/finishing process?

••

Interesting question. I can't think of anyone who would know, at this late date, but I will ask around.

Condolences to his friends and family.  I'm sure I'm just echoing what many others have said, but Carmen was THE Flash artist for me.  It's his work that springs to mind whenever I think or speak of Barry Allen.

I keep on reading obituaries that get the facts wrong: one said Carmine co-created Batman, another said he saved the Flash from cancellation.

I was in Florida/Disney all last week, but was saddened to
hear this. Carmine was a good guy, very kind to me when I
met him, even gave me a personalized freebie, which I later
sold to a JBF member when I was dumping a lot of stuff to
pay for some house repairs. Loved his Flash.

RIP Carmine. You will be missed.

Mark Evanier has an interesting piece over at his blog where he talks about how he believes that Infantino would want to be remembered more for his work as DC's editorial director/publisher than for his artwork.  I do think it could be argued that for at least the first four or five years of Infantino's tenure (1968-72) DC was the more innovative company of the big two, and was putting out stuff that was more groundbreaking and consistently better than Marvel's.

During that period DC revitalized Superman with a soft reboot and revitalized Batman with a re-emphasis on grittier detective and crime stories.  Even Aquaman was better than he ever had been under Skeates and Aparo.  Ditko and Kirby came to DC and brought their new creations.  We also had Kubert's Tarzan, Wein and Wrightson's Swamp Thing, and the O'Neil/Kaluta Shadow, Cockrum's Legion, as well as the underrated Jonah Hex.

Meanwhile, during the same period Marvel was stagnant.  Aside from the brief runs by Adams on X-Men and Avengers and Steranko on Nick Fury, the core characters and titles were coasting.  And aside from the obvious exception of Conan, I can't really think of any truly great new series that were introduced during that time.

The knock against Infantino (as Evanier points out) is that although he greenlit so many new titles and concepts, he was too quick to cancel many of them.  But during his first few years DC there really was an explosion of talent and new characters.

I met him about ten years ago at DragonCon in Atlanta.  He was sitting between Julie Schwarz and Bill Sienkiwicz and having a great time talking to them as well as the fans.

edited to crop the pic so the page would narrow

Sad news. I am thankful I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Pittsburgh Con about ten years ago. RIP.

Always wondered if it was Infantino's idea to add the hands to the caption boxes:

Found this model sheet for Batman-

"Both heroes have changed slightly since these drawings were done, but they have remained basically the same since they were first created, 35 years ago!"

The single most important aspect of the Golden and SIlver ages, perhaps. Altho different artistic styles abounded, and were encouraged, when artists drew the same character, they DREW THE SAME CHARACTER. As I have noted before, even Neal Adams, when he started drawing Batman for DC, stayed "on model". He drew in his own unmistakable style, but he drew the same character Carmine Infantino was drawing.

That 200th issue cover is especially illustrative. The Batman Neal drew is very obviously the same guy seen in the montage of covers that form the background.
