I think JB's FF run is the synchronicity of a talented writer/artist tackling a project obviously close to his heart. It shines thru in the work, which is why it's a timeless classic, IMO.

So...where is your quibble?
--------------------------------
Well, one is that I saw Reed as shorter than 6'2". Minor quibble, with the emphasis on minor. And I don't see the Thing being a full 4 inches shorter than Reed. I see him as maybe an inch shorter, closer to Reed's height than to Spider-Man's. Again, minor, minor quibble. No-one reads a comic and thinks, "Hmmmm, he's been drawn an inch too short" -- I was simply remarking on the small discord between my own, personal (and not very important) impression of the characters with the specific, written-down heights.

JB's FF is what got me into Marvel.  The art amazed me...the stories were just plain fun.  Such a great classic run!!  Now I want to dig them out and re-read!!

What amazed me was how different JB's art had become on FF compared to his work on UNCANNY X-MEN. You could tell he was learning and experimenting... it was an exciting thing to see issue by issue.

I think its pretty amazing comparing his work from the beginning of the FF run to his work at the end of it. There's A LOT of growth there.

JBs Fantastic Four ranks very high for my all time favorite comic book
runs. So damn good. Makes me wish I had an extra million laying
around so I could get 50 new issues from JB!

So many awesome issues in that run!!!

Unless i missed it - no one has mentioned John's smart integration of Frankie Raye into the storyline, then the team and ultimately as Galactus' herald.

I'm convinced John's Frankie gave me a thing about red-heads!!!

Also, loved! and loved some more! the failed attempt to restore Ben to his human form and the resulting "mud-like" Thing.

Stand out issues for me are just too many to name...i tried...then ended up listing almost everything.

I really, really need to get some of the original art from that run!!!

Favourite cover: 259....when Marvel got rid of the banner at the top of the covers.

Favourite villain....Tyros...Terrax...just genius!!

I'll shut up now...i think i could go on and on about this.....needless to say  i was gutted when John left FF....i collected FF for over 6 years...starting before 232....longest "relationship" i've ever had (so far!)

For me, it was that the FF most firmly set JB on the path to doing what he does best: tell stories.

JB's art on the FF has a special place in my heart, but it does pale in comparison to his improvements as an artist over the years. The story-telling is timeless though. No-one -- including Lee/Kirby -- has done such exciting things with the characters of Sue Storm, Dr Doom & She-Hulk.

I doubt Kirby really meant for the emblems to be "3D" (or embossed). The shifting drop shadow he drew was a fairly common comic convention, like the part in Li'l Abner's hair always being toward the viewer. Just something that made it a little bit easier to pound out those thousands of panels.
++++++++++++++

Oh, I agree. What I meant by "3-D" was that, early on, it looked more like (in-universe) a 2-D drawing of a rotated, 3-D "4". Other times, it looked more like a true drop-shadow (including a pinup where the symbols look just like your own version).

As an aside, I long ago figured out a reason for the loss of the drop-shadow at the end of the Negative Zone story that introduced the black-and-white uniforms--

Black (boots, gloves, collars, belts, rings around the symbols, drop-shadows) became white, blue (bodysuits, "4"s) became black, and white (circular background of the symbols)...stayed white.

Love that FF CHRONICLES! I think I still have it. And, yes: AWESOME
cover! I'd love to see it blown up to poster size!

JB's FF is my favorite work of his - followed closely by NEXT MEN -
and one of my favorite comic series runs ever! I've enjoyed some other
creative teams on the book but they all get measured against the Byrne
run.
